The USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism is proud to announce the selection of 17 talented and diverse journalists who will be participating in our 2024 Data Fellowship! Michelle Levander, USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Our program equips reporters to use the power of original data analysis to investigate health care, health equity and child well-being challenges, and to highlight promising paths forward. It includes four days of in-person training, reporting grants of $2000, and five months of ongoing virtual training and mentorship with some of the nation’s most respected data journalists. For our last session of the day, Meghan Hoyer, data director of The Washington Post, led our Fellows in an exercise where they worked together to vet and assess data attached to various media pitches provided to them.

We have arrived at the last day of our Fellowship Week! For one of our final sessions, we heard from Cheryl Phillips, director of Big Local News at Stanford University, on how our #USC2024DataFellows can use open records in their reporting. "Treat your correspondence as a legal document. Your audience are public officials, lawyers and judges. They might not know as much about data as you do, especially after this week of training, so you have to really spell it out for them in that first record, and then after any phone call, follow up with an email summarizing the phone call," Phillips advises our Fellows. Phillips also led our Fellows through an exercise in requesting public records, with the help of John Harden of The Washington Post and Paul Overberg of The Wall Street Journal.
