To the LA Board of Supervisors: EVACUATE THE YOUTH NOW! The youth locked inside Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall are trapped in the heart of an evacuation zone, with their lives hanging in the balance as the SoCal wildfires rage on. These young people are not just statistics—they are human beings. Right now, they are breathing in toxic smoke and exposed to harmful debris while the fires continue to devastate. We must prioritize real investment in community-driven housing solutions and alternatives to incarceration. The need for affordable, stable housing has never been greater, as folks from marginalized communities face increased threats to their personal safety. We need community-led solutions designed by and for people who have experienced violence, incarceration, poverty, and life on the streets. We need supportive and transitional housing for people returning from prison or aging out of the foster care system. Together, we can create a future where everyone has a place to call home.

This Black History Month, we honor the incredible leadership, vision, and resilience of Black women who have shaped policy, built communities, and inspired generations. From civil rights activists to contemporary change makers, they remind us that progress is not just possible—it is inevitable when we lead with courage and conviction. Let’s celebrate and support their legacy by amplifying their voices and building on their work.

We will not waver in the face of divisive politics perpetuated by oppressors. ? Our unity is a force that moves mountains. We stand together, unwavering and strong. At YWFC, we rise in solidarity and will leverage our privilege to protect our Indigenous and migrant communities—those who are at the heart of the current administration's attacks. In the U.S., no one is illegal on stolen land.

?Honoring MLK’s Legacy of Justice, Freedom, and Love ? Today, we stand on the shoulders of community activists like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. whose mission continues to remind us that true freedom is not only the absence of oppression but the presence of power to determine our own destinies, to live with dignity, and to be free from all forms of violence. The fight for freedom isn’t just about protesting injustice; it’s about creating a world where we, and all people, are seen, heard, and respected.

Time-sensitive survey ??? The Department of Youth Development (DYD) is conducting a survey as part of a landscape analysis to understand the availability of housing services for young people under the age of 26. The main focus is to find resources for justice-involved young people in LA County and with your responses DYD will be able to better assess resources. From everyone here at Young Women’s Freedom Center, we are beyond proud to stand in solidarity with you, Lateefah Simons, as you step into your new leadership role as a Member of Congress. On your first day in Washington, D.C., you were accompanied by Julia Arroyo, YWFC’s Executive Director, and Amika Mota, Sister Warriors Freedom Coalition’s Executive Director. This was truly a historic moment as one of our own was sworn into Congress—a day filled with hope, pride, and inspiration for the future. Lateefah’s journey embodies the voices of marginalized communities, particularly Black and Brown women and youth. Her leadership reminds us of the power of resilience and collective action.
