What to know about the Treaty Principles Bill in New Zealand On November 14th, a group of Māori Indigenous legislators disrupted parliament by staging a Haka—a ceremonial dance—in protest of the bill. The bill would reinterpret the colonial-era Treaty of Waitangi, which is the primary legal mechanism for enforcing Māori rights. Nearly 42,000 protesters lead a nine-day hikoi, or peaceful march in opposition to the legislation. For years, Adivasi communities in Nagarahole National Park, Karnataka, have been resisting displacement at the hands of India’s National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). Supported by nongovernmental climate organizations and coffee estate owners, Adivasi populations have faced numerous human rights violations in the name of conservation. Nagarahole was one of the first areas to be affected by Project Tiger, a piece of 1973 legislation that created protected reserves across India in the name of species protection. Despite a long history of peaceful co-dwelling between Adivasi peoples and protected species in the area, the Indian government aims to purge all human presence from the reservations. #NODAPL update: On October 14th, the Water Protectors Legal Collective filed a response to Energy Transfer’s latest motion, which alleged that the documents reporting 1.4 million gallons of toxic fluid reaching Lake Oahe were only available because of a “technological glitch.” As Natali Segovia, Executive Director and Senior Attorney of WPLC, states, “Now ET is worried because their poor environmental record is on blast and their hem is showing. This new smokescreen is an attempt to distract from the underlying merits of the case and the ongoing concerns about DAPL environmental safety.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e2Tj8UkV Image: Peg Hunter/Flickr #WaterIsLife #ProtectOurWater #EnvironmentalJustice #CorporateAccountability #StandWithWaterProtectors #DemandTransparency

On Friday, President Joe Biden apologized to the survivors and families affected by the United States federal boarding schools. This system inflicted immense suffering upon Indigenous communities, and acknowledgment alone does not equate to accountability. Dispossession and colonial violence are not merely historical issues; they are ongoing processes that require actionable change. Thus, we echo the NDN collective’s calls for concrete steps toward justice for Indigenous peoples and encourage others to sign and share their petition: https://lnkd.in/eShDHYew
