CSI visited Kalundborg Symbiosis during our Wastewater Symbiosis Study Tour. Thanks to the great KS team, our delegation learned some exciting ways in which Kalundborg is addressing their waste management.

The Center for Sustainable Infrastructure (CSI) seeks a talented project and relationship manager with an entrepreneurial spirit, who is passionate about innovative solutions that are great for people, planet, and prosperity, to lead our Innovation Lab. As director, you will work with industry, community leaders and economic development agencies to identify and develop plans for integrated infrastructure projects that combine profitability and sustainability. ? Reporting directly to CSI’s Executive Director, the Innovation Lab Director will communicate CSI’s vision and goals, negotiate service contracts and scopes, lead project execution and delivery, manage teams of experts (both staff and consultant), and ensure client satisfaction with deliverables. This is a senior level position requiring five or more years project management experience in related fields such as, but not limited to, wastewater, wood products, food and beverage production, infrastructure or utility systems, or industrial park development. In addition, a minimum of three years experience leading teams and managing direct reports is required. What is the energy and climate potential if we scale Danish benchmark wastewater treatment technology and know-how globally? That was the question i tried to answer when i had the pleasure of presenting for the delegation from the Pacific Northwest Center for Sustainable Infrastructure. But what are the potentials? ?Save energy approximate to all coal-fired powerplants of Europe ?? Avoid CO2 emissions equal to 6 times the annual emission of Denmark ??Doing the above with a typical ROI of less than a one year The findings presented were the result of our report prepared for DI Vand / DI Danish Water Industries, based on the energy and climate footprint performance of Marselisborg wastewater treatment plant, owned and operated by Aarhus Vand A/S. The presentation took place at State of Green Denmark, where i also had the pleasure hearing Ole Fritz Adeler present the Danish Climate Partnership for water, waste, and circular economy setting a bold and ambitious target for the Danish water sector, and Jacob Vind presenting how to get more with less using innovation and digitalization, showcasing the potential of thinking new and controlling more intelligently. The potentials are huge if we can scale the performance of the Marselisborg plant, both in terms of energy savings, energy production, but also reducing N2O emissions. Luckily the solution is not to build a new wastewater treatment plant. It can all be achieved by retrofitting existing infrastructure. This is significant, as it will limit the scope 3 emissions otherwise needed for concrete and steel in new plants. How would you go about it? ?? Focus on existing infrastructure with more intelligent process control ?? Optimize energy and heat recovery ? Enable sector coupling to utilize ALL surplus energy It sounds simple, but the devil is in the detail. Amy Wentworth, Pacific Seafood’s Director of Environmental Health and Safety, shares some valuable insights she learned while visiting Denmark during CSI’s Industrial Symbiosis Study Tour last June. Why should a successful industrial operation embrace change and consider new ways of doing things? In addition to reducing environmental footprint, companies can make a strong business case that embracing symbiosis may increase revenue streams as well. Last week, I had the privilege of attending and speaking at the Circular Water Economy Summit in Dallas, Texas—an event that has quickly become one of my favorites among the various water-related conferences I attend. The summit successfully brought together stakeholders from both the water sector and the industries it serves for insightful discussions on collaborative solutions. One of the standout panels, moderated by Rhys Roth, focused on industrial symbiosis—a concept that, if you haven't explored yet, is truly fascinating. The panel highlighted significant efforts in the Pacific Northwest to promote industrial symbiosis. I was particularly pleased by the insights into Pasco's project, which leverages our algae-based technology to recover nitrogen on a large scale. Overall, the summit fostered constructive conversations on advancing the circular economy of water. It was encouraging to see such dedication to finding synergies between sectors and transforming what was once considered waste into valuable resources.
