Exploring the Value of Focus Groups in Research and Evaluation Focus groups have long been a powerful tool in both qualitative research and program evaluation, allowing researchers to capture rich insights that might be missed through other methods. Recently, I’ve been diving deeper into the works of experts like?Phil Macnaghten?and?Greg Myers, whose contributions to focus group methodology have significantly shaped how we approach participant interaction and data analysis. Phil Macnaghten emphasizes the importance of understanding participants' perspectives in a way that respects their lived experiences and the social contexts in which they operate. His work in environmental research and policy highlights how focus groups can uncover deeper, often untapped insights that drive informed decision-making. Greg Myers, on the other hand, offers valuable frameworks for analyzing focus group discussions, particularly his attention to the nuances of language, interaction, and group dynamics. His contributions have made it clear that analyzing the subtleties of communication in focus groups is as important as the content itself. For those working in program evaluation, using focus groups effectively can reveal not only the outcomes but also the process, helping to shape future interventions and refine strategies. New Directions for Evaluation (NDE) is recruiting a part-time Project Manager for the recently funded Inviting New Voices into Evaluation (INVitE-Pub) initiative. The INVitE-Pub initiative is a two-year pilot project led by the American Evaluation Association's NDE journal and funded by RWJF. The initiative aims to trial a set of innovative support structures designed to engage new and diverse voices in evaluation publishing. This project will provide tailored assistance to first-time authors, first-time guest editors, and individuals from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in evaluation, fostering their involvement in shaping the field through publishing.
