Our PSU MSRE students, undergrad real estate property management students, & RE alumni recently had the opportunity to tour one of Oregon's most sustainable multifamily developments, The Steward, with PSU real estate alumni/Advisory Board member, Brenner Daniels and brother, Josh Daniels of DIG Real Estate. “Creating a fully electric living experience at The Steward required us to think differently about this development,” said Josh Daniels, Principal of DIG. “Initially, we focused on removing the property’s carbon operating footprint, but we later found opportunities with our design and construction partners to ultimately deliver one of the most sustainable multifamily options in our market.” The Steward’s 103 kilowatt rooftop photovoltaic solar system generates nearly all of the energy needed to operate the building, allowing The Steward's electricity credit program to reduce or eliminate residents' electricity bills.?DIG partnered with?Energy Trust of Oregon to work through its?Path to Net Zero?program and is expecting The Steward to achieve this status soon after opening (upon testing qualification). “Buildings that use less energy mean lower bills for families and safe, more comfortable homes,” said Juliette Poff, Marketing Specialist, Energy Trust of Oregon. “We’re glad to support DIG and other developers or organizations that want to bring the benefits of energy-efficiency and renewable energy to more Oregonians.”? It was also interesting for our group to see that 75% of The Steward’s parking spaces are enabled for electric vehicle (EV) charging, with one EV charging space available for three residences at The Steward on average. Newer multifamily properties will generally only offer an average of one EV charging space for 20 to 50 residences. “We know that EV and plug-in hybrid EV charging is a major challenge for residents in multifamily settings, and we wanted to present a better solution for the community at The Steward,”?said Brenner Daniels, Principal of DIG. “After three years of watching DIG Real Estate work hard to bring Tigard's first Path to Net Zero building to life, I’m excited to see the impact The Steward will have, not just on our community, but on the planet as well,” said Heidi Lueb, Mayor of Tigard. “We hope The Steward inspires residents and other developers to prioritize environmentally friendly practices, creating a healthier future for generations to come.” Thank you DIG Real Estate for sharing the development successes and challenges of The Steward with our PSU students + alumni. Thank you also for your commitment and investment in creating a clean environment that is fully electric with no carbon footprint! https://bethesteward.com/

Our PSU real estate alumni recently had the opportunity to take a sneak peek of CASCADA Spa and Hotel with Danya Feltzin of Solterra and Timothy Cooke, AIA Cooke of LEVER Architecture. Cascada is the much anticipated hotel & wellness retreat soon to open in NE Alberta. The property will have approximately 100 hotel rooms as well as thermal springs, spa, and fitness. With their full amenities (dishwasher, washer/dryer, invisacook counter) the rooms are equipped for guests to "stay a day, a week, a month - or a year". There are many beautiful details to note as you walk the property - the kinetic chandelier that emulates bioluminescent water as you walk through, the pool in the Conservatory that incorporates biophilia & solar panels - and then as you go further below ground to the city's largest hydrothermal spa with many thermal plunge pools, saunas, and steam rooms. The evening was capped off with delicious food + drinks at Terra Mae, the Portuguese-Japanese fusion restaurant within the property. Thank you, Danya Feltzin, for an inspiring evening - we can't wait to return for a staycation or spa day pass!

Last Saturday, 9/14, our Portland State University Real Estate Alumni spent the afternoon supporting?Honoring Our Precious Elders (H.O.P.E)?for their annual service event. Two teams of PSU alumni, Real Estate Emerging Leaders (REEL) Club, Portland State University students, and Center staff volunteered to clean the yards of two houses in the Montavilla neighborhood of SE Portland. We had the most amazing time reconnecting (after all, once a Viking, always a Viking!)- as well as making new connections - all while pulling ivy, vines, blackberry bushes, and hauling yard debris! The bonus was meeting one of the homeowners, 93 year old twins, Blanche & Rose - who were most appreciative or our manual labor. H.O.P.E Founder, Hen Truong ([email protected]), led the cause - you can reach out to him if you are interested in supporting H.O.P.E. and their mission to provide seniors with fixed incomes & limited capabilities free yard maintenance. With regular yard work provided by H.O.P.E, seniors are given a peace of mind as well as a sense of community. Their goal is to help elders age in place & stay in their homes for as long as possible. ?? PSU Undergraduate Real Estate Students at the 2024 Spectrum Conference & Trade Show! ?? On Thursday, September 12th, 11 Portland State University students attended the Multifamily NW Spectrum Education Conference and Trade Show. Themed “Night at the Museum,” inspired by the film where exhibits come to life, it was a day full of learning and networking opportunities. ?? The keynote, “Building Resilient Teams: Leadership Lessons from the Queen of the Nile,” was delivered by Stephanie Puryear Helling, who, embracing the museum theme, dressed as Cleopatra. Helling shared how Cleopatra’s leadership can still inspire today’s teams and drew parallels to historical figures who have shaped effective leadership.? ?? These lessons provided our PSU students with valuable insights and leadership skills for their future real estate careers. With nearly 1,400 attendees, the conference offered a comprehensive look at the local real estate industry, featuring a busy trade show and insightful sessions. Students explored the latest trends, engaged with experts, and made valuable connections in the multifamily sector. ?? A big thank you to Multifamily NW for hosting our students, and to all the volunteers, staff, and industry suppliers who made it possible.? ?? The Center for Real Estate is developing the next generation of diverse, talented real estate leaders, and we could not do this without local support from the industry!
