A great article from one of our certified RETAIN Coaches and some thoughts from our founder and CEO Amy Beacom, Ed.D. about work/life interference and enhancement. We’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences with this!

Love this helpful and actionable article written by Frederick Van Riper, R-PLC one of our certified RETAIN Parental Leave Coaches! Ask yourself, as I am now, are you and your partner doing anything close to this? (And if you are wondering what this has to do with work, read on!) Sadly, on reflection, I have to admit I’m not doing this with my husband. But reading Frederick’s article I am inspired to start and it is reminding me about one of the things I teach in our RETAIN Coach certification program (our Fall cohort starts in two weeks, reach out if you are intrigued): Home and Work are not the separate bounded worlds we often pretend they are - for better or worse what happens or is learned in one spills over to the other. Us organizational psychologists call this work/life interference if it impacts either role negatively and work/life enrichment when the interaction is more positive. So doing what it takes to make sure one area is going well will usually help the others go better too (which moves you to work/life enrichment). When you consciously make the structure, procedure/process, time, and energy to connect and feel confident, happy, and supported at home it’s going to allow you to show up at work from that solid place too. What you learn at home you bring to work and visa-versa. You are honing that organized giving muscle at home which makes it a lot easier to notice and do the things that make your working environment better too. Endnote: When working-people become working-parents they can seize the 3 phase parental leave transition and define their path forward to get them the life they want or they can let the chaos inherent in transition define that path for them. As an expecting or new working parent it’s one zillion times easier to proactively plan, notice, adjust, learn, and keep going when you have a RETAIN Coach in your corner guiding you. So if becoming a working parent is a career milestone you or someone on your team is facing, or if you are an internal HR or leave professional supporting this transition, reach out join our Fall cert to become a certified RETAIN Coach or reach out to hire one or learn more. At the Center for Parental Leave Leadership we have over 100 talented, passionate, certified coaches (including Frederick Van Riper, R-PLC!) eager to help you and your employees succeed at work AND at life. ??

Data shows that women workers aged 50+ are paid just 75 cents for every $1 paid to men of the same age. So much less that women aged 65+ are at higher risk for poverty than men, due to the retirement income gap! #MomsEqualPay
