A COP29 Azerbaijan side event co-hosted by Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions, WorldFish, African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), European Bureau for Conservation and Development, Environmental Defense Fund, FAO, and the Aquatic Blue Food Coalition highlighted how these foods can contribute to climate solutions. ?? Blue foods at #COP29 ??? COP29 in Baku, which began last week, is an important opportunity to discuss how countries can prioritise blue foods as a powerful and vital force in achieving global climate and development goals. ?? Did you know aquatic foods are the most traded food commodity globally? From oceans, rivers, and lakes, they provide essential protein and nutrients, especially for vulnerable communities that do not have access to alternative food sources. Plus, many aquatic animals have lower carbon footprints than land-based proteins, with some species, including bivalves and seaweed, having minimal or neutral greenhouse gas emissions. ?? Despite their potential, over 80 countries’ climate plans completely overlook blue foods, while another 37 mention the sector only briefly, according to a recent analysis. Will COP29 be the turning point for blue foods to gain the recognition they deserve? ??
