More institutional investors buying up single- and two-family homes means higher home prices, fewer pathways for families to create generational wealth, and more long-time community members pushed out of their neighborhoods. We stand with a growing coalition of organizations in supporting Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposals to curb institutional investor activity in New York’s housing market. These measures will help level the playing field for everyday New Yorkers. Please read the letter of support — published in POLITICO — and share with your network: https://lnkd.in/e4Mx6V-q

The Center for NYC Neighborhoods mourns the loss of Dr. Hazel Dukes, a national leader and friend of New York communities. As a champion for fair housing, her work enabled the dream of homeownership for Black New Yorkers, ensured families could stay in their homes and communities, and fought to close the racial wealth gap. We will be ever grateful for Dr. Dukes’ support for the Homeowner Protection Program (HOPP). Her legacy will live through the generations of leaders she mentored and the countless families who continue to benefit from her tireless advocacy.

From the The Buffalo News: Governor New York State Governor Kathy Hochul’s budget includes wins for affordable homeownership — an op ed co-written by Karen Nicolson (she/her) of the Center for Elder Law & Justice and our own Christie Peale shares the details. We’re thrilled to see the Governor’s commitment to funding homeowner-centered initiatives like the Homeowner Protection Program ($40 million), home repair and upgrade programs like Resilient Retrofits, and expanded downpayment assistance ($50 million). HOPP has helped more than 150,000 homeowners avoid foreclosure, manage debt, and stop the theft of their homes. Thank you, Governor Hochul and New York State Homes & Community Renewal, for prioritizing homeowners and communities. We will continue to work with the State legislature and partners like the Center for Elder Justice to make affordable homeownership a reality for more New Yorkers.
