We are thrilled to partner with the WA Department of Children, Youth, and Families to bring system impacted youth and staff out into nature. The first outing was in partnership with the Tacoma Youth Marine foundation Northwest Credible Messenger where we brought dozens of youth and staff members out on a ship off the coast of Tacoma. Participants learned about Washington’s maritime history and industry and got directly connected with post-release employment, apprenticeship, and scholarship opportunities. Some of the outings will have a post-release employment component and others are purely for the intrinsic healing values that getting outdoors has both for the youth and staff participants.

Safely reducing incarceration in the U.S. while improving conditions for incarcerated people and staff.
关于我们
The Center for Justice and Human Dignity (CJHD) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is safely reducing incarceration in the United States while improving conditions for those imprisoned and working inside. We promote values of human dignity and shared safety while keeping in mind the needs of survivors, directly impacted people, and society at large. Alongside diverse partners, we collaborate with judges on alternative sentencing, correctional leaders on the conditions of confinement, and policymakers on early release strategies.

This week I testified for a bill in my home state of Maine that would remove the statutory presumption that anyone ever convicted of any crime punishable by a year or more in prison lacks the “good moral character” to practice law. I’m already in—but I’m hoping to help open the door for others any way I can. We have one hand to keep climbing higher and another to help pull others up with us.

Thank you Christopher Poulos for your partnership and for sharing and working with me to set up our first of hopefully many outdoor adventures with young people. Sharing an article inspired by our work together on behalf of young people in JR. It was a beautiful day for all. 30 young people in Juvenile Rehabilitation across the state had the opportunity to attend an educational boat tour of the Port of Tacoma as part of a new initiative to develop outdoor recreation programs that support successful reentry through community partnerships. Young people from Canyon View Community Facility, Twin Rivers Community Facility, Ridgeview Community Facility, Sunrise Community Facility, Oakridge Community Facility, and Parole from Region 5 attended a tour through the Tacoma Youth Marine Center in partnership with Credible Messengers. “Real change happens not in isolation, but in collaboration. I'm deeply grateful to our partners at the Tacoma Youth Marine Foundation, Chris Poulos, NW Credible Messengers, and the dedicated JR employees, who are joining hands with us to empower young people across the state.” Said DCYF Assistant Secretary of Juvenile Rehabilitation Felice Upton.?“Young people saw opportunity, got a great new experience and learned a lot.”? Young people enjoyed being on a boat, learning about career opportunities in the marine industry, and touring the boat itself. From the engine room to the navigation system, young people explored and asked questions.? “If just one young person gets that spark and wants to pursue a career it’s worth it” said one staff member who traveled from Wenatchee with young people from Canyon View Community Facility. Staff at the Tacoma Youth Marine Center shared details about career opportunities both on and off the boat including crane operation, port security, marine biology, engineering, and captain positions. They also shared details about future training and funding for anyone interested in the industry.? “This is awesome! I have always been interested in this stuff, but I have never had the opportunity to see something like this.” said one young person. “I get to call my mom and tell her I was on a boat.” A few of the young people even got hands on experience throwing fender lines to dock the boat. The Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families would like to thank Credible Messengers, Chris Poulos and Tacoma Youth Marine Center for making this possible.?

"While people in pretrial custody in Washington have a right to vote, they don’t always have access, said Christopher Poulos, executive director at the Center for Justice and Human Dignity. Poulos was formerly incarcerated and registered to vote in Maine. He said Maine mailed him a ballot, which he said helped him feel connected to his community. '?I went on to go to college, go to law school, become an active first responder here in Washington state. Part of the reason I was able to do all that is because of the mental shift that happened inside me by still feeling part of my community, even though I was separated from it,' he said..."

I did not end up taking any downtime over the holidays. I will soon, but not yet. I’m trying to pull a rabbit out of a hat to find support for our work amidst a corporate and foundation retraction from criminal justice related funding. Our work at the Center for Justice and Human Dignity involves safely expanding innovative and effective alternatives to incarceration. This includes supporting the design and launch of the nation’s first federal mental health focused diversion court. We are also working to establish family councils at youth facilities so family members of incarcerated youth can voice their recommendations and concerns and have increased communication with facility staff and leadership. And our newest project, which I’m very excited about, involves getting currently and formerly incarcerated youth and adults out into nature and out onto the water. For example, we will be taking a group of Washington state youth to learn about the maritime industry, explore career opportunities, and even go out on one of the ships. This will be a first for many participants. The photo here is from sailing and camping on Viking ships last spring with currently and formerly incarcerated Norwegians—more to come on that. If any of this resonates with you, please consider supporting us. www.cjhd.org/donate

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah. We are thinking of everyone confined in prisons and jails, everyone working in prisons and jails, and the families of both during this holiday season. We are currently working to establish family councils at youth and adult prisons so family members of incarcerated people can have an open line of communication with the faciltities and voice their recommendations and concerns in an organized way. We are also working to plan and co-lead outdoor activities for people preparing for reentry and correctional staff. If you would consider supporting our work with an end of the year donation, you can do so here: www.cjhd.org/donate/

Please consider supporting the Center for Justice and Human Dignity for Giving Tuesday! Link: www.cjhd.org/donate/
I do not have a development team to craft a fancy campaign but would still love to have you consider us for Giving Tuesday. Our work includes: -Designing, launching, and evaluating safe and effective alternatives to incarceration that address underlying causes and conditions and end often generational cycles of poverty and incarceration. For example, we are currently assisting with launching the first federal mental health diversion court in the country. -Developing family councils at youth and adult correctional facilities so family members can voice their concerns and recommendations in an organized and accountable way. This work is focused on the youth system in Washington state and adult system in Maine. -Organizing reentry-focused outdoor activities for currently and formerly incarcerated youth, adults, and correctional staff. -Breaking down “us vs. them” dynamics in prisons and improving conditions for people serving time and correctional staff. www.cjhd.org/donate/
