Center for Inspired Teaching is an independent nonprofit organization that invests in and supports teachers. Inspired Teaching provides transformative, improvisation-based professional learning for teachers that is 100% engaging – intellectually, emotionally, and physically. Inspired Teaching envisions a future where all students are enthusiastic learners, who look forward to school and have agency in their education. That begins with teachers. When teachers build creativity, critical thinking skills, or content knowledge in a joyful and challenging environment, they are better positioned to build those skills in their students. Inspired Teaching Institutes are FREE, improvisation-based professional development for teachers and school leaders. They move participants beyond passive professional learning: Inspired Teaching teaches the way people learn best – with our whole selves. Learn more on the Inspired Teaching website!

For October’s online Inspired Teaching Institute – “Cultivating Curiosity: Raising Social Awareness” – Jenna Fournel was joined by Dina Buchbinder Auron, founder of Education for Sharing/Educación para Compartir (E4S), and her colleague Brooke Wallace. Dina and Brooke described E4S’ mission to “form better global citizens through innovative education based on the power of play.” They also shared concrete activities and advice teachers can use to infuse play throughout their instruction.

Through student-led conversations, Speak Truth participants learn to productively and respectfully discuss current, controversial topics. These thought-provoking conversations teach students to defend their stances on myriad issues and help them develop and recognize the power of their voices. In addition to strengthening these important skills, student participants will receive community service hours. New dates through spring 2025 -- Thursdays @ MLK Library, 5-7PM -- are now added to the registration page! Tell the DC teens in your life to sign up today at the link! https://ow.ly/iIhm50U8uSK

The divisions that existed in our society ahead of last week's election are in danger of growing even wider. As we consider the skills our students will need to strengthen today -- curiosity, empathy, critical thinking -- to be the leaders of tomorrow, we need to embrace opportunities to explore the complicated or controversial in the classroom. In this week's Hooray For Monday, Jenna offers tools for building the next generation of leaders in our democracy, including the DIVE framework, from the book Seek by Scott Shigeoka, for helping young people cultivate deep curiosity. We are thrilled to announce that Inspired Teaching has been selected — for the second year in a row — for the HundrEDorg Global Collection! HundrED’s Global Collection showcases the 100 most impactful and scalable education innovations globally each year. The Inspired Teaching Approach was selected from a pool of thousands of applicants worldwide for transforming the school experience for students away from compliance and obedience toward engagement and curiosity. Since 1995, Inspired Teaching has taught thousands of teachers to center their instruction on our 4 I’s and 5 Core Elements, creating classrooms where students are authentically engaged, joyfully motivated, and active participants in their learning. We are proud of the work that we do, and thankful to HundrED for this recognition! The ABCDE of Learner Needs Framework was selected for the 2024 HundrED Global Collection. https://ow.ly/PZ8550U62Pz

A note from Aleta: "Since the pandemic hit, Inspired Teaching has been committed to teaching teachers to build their uncertainty tolerance – their ability to move forward, to cultivate curiosity and a love of learning in themselves and their students, even while navigating the unknown. My daughter Isabel is teaching fourth grade this year, and I am so proud of her. This morning, she was the first to text our family chat, checking in on us all. I found myself responding, “Go be a wonderful, kind and curious teacher to your fourth graders today.” Writing those words offered me a moment of clarity. Teachers can, and must, encourage students to wonder, to approach new situations and new people from a place of curiosity. This week teachers and school leaders showed up for their students. I’m grateful for all of you, wherever you teach, and whoever you teach. I want you to know that Inspired Teaching is committed to continuing to show up for you. We will be right here supporting you, and challenging you to fuel your students’ curiosity. As I wrote earlier this week, school is the place young people go to learn. And so, school must be the place where they learn to process important events in their lives. The 2024 election is the epitome of an important event, and it’s our responsibility to teach our children about it. Principals, parents, and policymakers: please support teachers in sparking, not diminishing, students’ curiosity. This is our sacred work as educators."
