The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (#IBAHRI) and 67 other #humanrights organisations have signed a joint statement in support of the No Death Penalty Campaign and Black Tuesdays – when prisoners in #Iranian jails go on hunger strike to protest the country’s #deathpenalty. Nearly two years ago, 22-year-old Mahsa Jina Amini was killed in state custody, just days after being arrested for wearing an "improper" hijab in Tehran. Her death ignited the Woman Life Freedom uprising in September 2022, where Iranians protested for months against the violence and repression of the Islamic Republic. Though the uprising was brutally crushed—leaving over 500 dead, tens of thousands arrested, and many injured or blinded—a quiet revolution endures. Women across Iran continue to defy the mandatory hijab, a symbol of state oppression, facing violence and imprisonment for their peaceful resistance. The Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) honors these women and their courage, sharing their voices through interviews conducted in August and September 2024. Their message is one of determination, resilience, and hope. Read excerpts from our interviews with people inside Iran: https://lnkd.in/g8XRvYq3

?? In the first eight months of 2024, an alarming number of border couriers, primarily from Iran’s Kurdish and Baluchi minorities, were killed as Islamic Republic agents use unlawful and lethal force against those who transport goods and fuel across Iranian borders as their only means of survival. From January to August 2024: ?? At least 30 Kurdish couriers (kulbars) were killed. 198 others were injured, including six children. ?? At least 34 Baluchi fuel couriers (sukhtbars) were killed. 39 others were injured. Kulbars are Kurdish cross-border couriers transporting goods on their backs between the Kurdistan regions of Iran and Iraq, while sukhtbars are Baluchi fuel couriers operating in Sistan and Baluchestan province. These workers carry heavy loads across Iran's borders, often navigating rugged and hazardous terrain, are paid based on the weight of their cargo, and face frequent risks, including being shot and injured or killed by Iranian border guards. ?? This Labor Day, we stand in solidarity with the courageous workers and labor rights leaders in Iran who serve their nation with immense dedication, despite being subjected to conditions unworthy of their sacrifices. From nurses striking for better working conditions to factory workers and teachers, their peaceful fight for their rights is met with repression and imprisonment instead of the respect they deserve. Iran, a founding member of the International Labor Organization (ILO), continues to shamefully violate all its Fundamental Principles by silencing labor activism through violence and jailing those who dare to defend workers' rights. ? Today, we honor those who persist in their fight for justice, dignity, and fair treatment for all workers. Their bravery and sacrifices will never be forgotten. ??
