On January 26, the Center for Human Rights and International Justice at Boston College had the honor of hosting Gabor Rona, a distinguished Professor at the Cardozo School of Law with extensive experience in international legal practices in armed conflict. Professor Rona's lecture delves into the application of international law to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, offering crucial insights and legal perspectives. ??? In a time when dialogue about the region's conflict is often fraught with apprehension, Professor Rona's presentation provides a structured means to engage through the lens of international law. His expertise and experience with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and Human Rights First bring depth and clarity to this complex issue. ?? Hope and the Role of International Institutions: Despite acknowledging the challenges and limitations of international law, Professor Rona underscores its preventive power and the significance of judicial bodies like the International Criminal Court (ICC). He asserts that “Law does less than you may like, but more than you may think,” highlighting the crucial role of international and domestic courts in maintaining accountability and preventing further violence.
