Delving into new territory, Anne Loehr (she/her/hers) presented our first ever session on Generative AI & Sustainability:?Navigating Its Environmental Impact with the AstraZeneca Sustainability Champions group. Anne began, like any good presentation, by making sure everyone was on the same page. After a brief poll established that the majority of the participants knew some, but not much, about Artificial Intelligence (AI), Anne went on to define some terminology, including traditional (a.k.a. discriminative) AI vs generative AI, and established the various sources of AI's environmental impacts, namely the hardware, the training of models, and inference, or sending queries to the various platforms. Some interesting facts about generative AI: - AI data centers consume, per year, as much electricity as all of Italy - By 2026, AI data centers could become the 5th largest power consumer on Earth - The training for ChatGPT-3 alone (which is one of many models) required 1,287 MWh, which is enough to power 120 U.S. homes for an entire year - One AI data center uses as much water in a single day as a mid-sized farm needs to grow crops for an entire season, which harms both water availability and biodiversity - An AI query uses 4-5 times as much power as a traditional search engine query From there, the team took some time to brainstorm about the positives and negatives about using AI, compiling everyone's thoughts on a virtual whiteboard. A number of ideas came out, from the need for innovation through AI to the idea that AI could possibly solve its own problem to a comparison to the unintended environmental impacts of the Industrial Revolution. Afterwards, the discussion continued with some possible solutions as well as ways that individuals can reduce their carbon footprint in the workplace, both in terms of AI tools as well as other ways that technology can be an environmental drain, such as sending attachments and creating multiple files instead of using collaborative tools on a single file. The session closed with AstraZeneca presenting their current and future plans for prioritizing sustainability while not sacrificing innovation when it comes to using AI. Do you have an environmental team that would be interested in a session on environmentally responsible use of generative AI? Ever have one of those days where a single, one-sentence email changes an entire plan? We were gearing up to fly out one of our facilitators to the opposite coast for a day-long workshop at the end of the month. Then we get an email: "The training will be virtual." Suddenly, all plans had to shift. We had to triage - what activities could we keep, and what needed to be modified? What are the technology capabilities of the participants? How do we keep people engaged for an 8-hour session when they are behind a screen instead of in front of you? Below are some tips to consider when shifting from an in-person to a virtual presentation or training: ?? Break up the day. Give people more breaks to stretch and look away from the screen. Ironically, this will help maintain focus and give participants more stamina. ??? Allow participants to contribute freely when possible. While there are many advantages to virtual meetings and trainings, such as flexibility and expanded ability to participate, one disadvantage is the lack of immediate feedback. It's a lot harder to see facial expressions or feel the mood of a room over the computer, so encourage people to stay on camera, keep their mics unmuted, and use the chat and/or reaction buttons whenever it's not disruptive. ?? Use teamwork. Hearing one voice consistently throughout the day is a surefire way to make a session feel even longer. Plus, it's hard for one person to energize a whole crowd with limited feedback across multiple hours. Utilize multiple presenters to break up the monotony for the participants and to keep the energy up for the facilitators. ?? Focus on activities instead of videos or lectures. While there is certainly a place for videos in a virtual workshop (particularly to give the presenter a short break), interactive content is even more important than it is in an in-person session to keep up engagement. Where you may give manipulatives or worksheets in-person, you can use anything from polls and quizzes to fillable PDFs or online games to keep people actively participating. See our past post on virtual holiday parties for some additional ideas for games and/or ice breakers: https://lnkd.in/eBV6eNq8 ?? And, lastly, make sure to ask about the technology access for your participants. Never assume everyone has access to a printer for worksheets. Find out if everyone even has a camera or microphone - you might be surprised! Confirm that attendees can access external links if you will be sending them to websites during the presentation. And allow time for training on any new or unusual platforms or programs. Make sure everyone is on the same page and prepared for all of the wonderful activities you have planned. Virtual workshops are a fantastic way to reach a wider audience. It just requires a slightly different approach and a few additional considerations.

A fantastic ad spot just in time for United Nations World Down Syndrome Day! This catchy clip highlights the importance bringing people with disabilities into decision-making spaces. The best way to ensure access and fairness for everyone is to hear a variety of perspectives and understand the struggles others may face that you haven't been exposed to. From highlighting the lack of wheelchair ramps on a proposed train station plan to demonstrating the danger of an audio-only fire alarm for someone with a hearing impairment, the musical video goes through a number of short scenarios where leaders have made a decision that didn't account for a particular disability, such as placing supplies on a high shelf out of reach for an employee with dwarfism. It's an efficient demonstration of why everyone should look around and take note of who is NOT in the room when making a decision. Please watch this important video by CoorDown and National Down Syndrome Society, created in collaboration with SMALL and produced by Indiana Production #NoDecisionWithoutUs #WorldDownSyndromeDay #WDSD25
This #WorldDownSyndromeDay, we've joined forces with CoorDown and other international Down syndrome organizations to spread the powerful message: No Decision Without Us. ?? People with disabilities deserve a seat at the table where decisions are made about their lives, their futures, and their rights. Let’s work together toward a world where every voice is valued. #NoDecisionWithoutUs #WDSD25

With this in mind, we are sharing again our infographic on what employers need to know when an employee receives a cancer diagnosis. (While not all risk factors can be controlled, there are some ways to reduce your risk, from diet and exercise to medication to various screenings. March is also Irish American Heritage Month, which was created to celebrate the integral role of Irish immigrants and their descendants in building the nation we know today. Mother Jones, an Irish American labor activist, dedicated her life to fighting for fair wages, safer working conditions, and the rights of child laborers. Her fearless advocacy still inspires activists today. And from Irish roots to the stars, Eileen Collins became the first woman to command a space shuttle mission. She paved the way for future generations in aerospace, proving that no dream is too big. The resilience, dedication to community, and hard work of Irish Americans have helped drive the progress of industries, the arts, and social movements.
