The Center for Excellence in Education was founded in 1983 by the late Admiral H.G. Rickover and Joann P. DiGennaro, President of the Center. The Center's mission is to nurture high school and university scholars to careers of excellence and leadership in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and to encourage collaboration between and among scientific and technological leaders in the global community. CEE sponsors two programs for top achieving U.S. high school students: CEE's Research Science Institute (RSI), offered in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is a six week summer enrichment program that emphasizes advanced theory and research in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics. CEE's USA Biolympiad is the nation’s most prestigious biology education and testing program for high school students. It enriches the life science education of nearly 12,000 talented students annually with twenty finalists invited to a two-week residential training program. CEE's Teacher Enrichment Program helps to assure a future talented and diverse U.S. workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). TEP provides opportunities for high school teachers to connect with leading experts from industry and academia to explore cutting-edge research and make meaningful professional links with direct benefits for their students. All TEP resources and professional development events are cost-free to participants. To date, nearly 5,000 teachers from over 1400 schools have participated. After each event, teachers are provided resources to take back to their classrooms. The program has reached nearly 600,000 underserved rural and urban students to consider STEM careers. CEE’s STEM Lyceums are a series of monthly virtual meetings that engage high school students in discussion and exploration of STEM concepts and unique STEM career pathways, provided at no cost to schools or students.

Double Rickoid Jeffrey Wang participated in USABO in 2009 and 2011, and in RSI in 2010. At the time, he attended a high school with a 35% graduation rate. He is now a research-track anesthesia resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Everything changed, he says, when he discovered CEE: "When I attended USABO, my life opened up. I met people who shared my interests, and we explored the subjects that fascinated us the most. The people I met through CEE are still my friends. And there are things I learned that I still use in my daily life." Here's a Throwback Thursday photo from a past Research Science Institute (RSI). CEE's RSI is an intensive, six-week program that combines on-campus course work in scientific theory with off-campus work in science and technology research. Students conduct original, innovative research in state-of-the-art university laboratories, hospitals, and corporate research facilities under the mentorship of leading scientists, engineers, and researchers in the students’ respective areas of interest. In their final week, students demonstrate their research work through written academic papers and oral presentations to their peers and a panel of judges. In addition to their individualized research, the students—dubbed “Rickoids” after the late Admiral H.G. Rickover, father of the Nuclear Navy and founder of the Center with Joann P. DiGennaro—also study pure and applied mathematics, physical and biological science, economics, and humanities. RSI is offered cost-free to all students competitively selected to attend. Students are selected by a committee of professional educators and RSI alumni based on high school records, personal essays, standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, research experience, potential for leadership, and honors and awards in math and science. To date, over 3,000 high school students have experienced RSI.
