CEAL@UNC is committed to advancing the well-being of the people who live and work in assisted living through research, practice, and policy, and recognizes that bridging the gap between the three is key toward that end. To make research more available in support of this goal, CEAL@UNC maintains a comprehensive repository of summaries and links to academic publications related to assisted living dating back to 2022. In addition, CEAL@UNC staff are actively creating a "What this means for you" summary of each article, making it easier for consumers, practitioners, policymakers, and other researchers to access and apply the latest findings. CEAL@UNC has signed a letter of support for the seventh wave of the National Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Study (NPALS), and invites its friends and affiliates?to encourage assisted living and other post-acute/LTC providers that receive a data collection packet to participate in the study, as well as to share how they have used NPALS data in their work. The publicly available reports are invaluable to understanding the current status of assisted living and its role across long-term care services and support sectors. The most recent NPALS data found that for the first time,?more than half of residential long-term care is provided in assisted living, as well as notable needs of assisted living residents for support with locomotion, cognitive impairment, depression, and acute care. Information about the NPALS can be found on CEAL@UNC's website here: https://lnkd.in/eJwiUdKf

CEAL@UNC has published its second guest column in McKnight’s Senior Living, titled "Balancing the Equation: Person-Centered Employment Practices in Assisted Living." This piece highlights a key question: Why are the core principles of person-centeredness—including quality of life, privacy, choice, dignity, inclusion, and independence—not consistently applied to those who work in assisted living communities? The article offers concrete recommendations to provide the same respect to staff that is given to residents, including: individualized training and growth plans, flexible scheduling, fair compensation, and recognition. CEAL@UNC is grateful to McKnight's Senior Living for the opportunity to continue to advance the well-being of those who live and work in assisted living.
