Workforce development is an important pillar of our Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein at North Carolina State University. Our WFD team (Michelle Schroeder-Moreno, Sylvia Nassar, Jennifer Pancorbo, Russ Read, Bryan Sales, Leonard Williams et al.) is developing a portfolio of education and training programs to benefit various stakeholders across the ag, food, and biomanufacturing ecosystems. We're happy to announce one such initiative for community college and high school instructors - the BIOSCIENCES SUMMER INDUSTRY FELLOWS PROGRAM. In partnership with the National Center for the Biotechnology Workforce at Forsyth Technical Community College, we will select and fully fund two Fellows to do a mentored internship in the sustainable protein industry in summer 2025. This experience can enhance the faculty's expertise and equip them with practical, up-to-date knowledge to enrich their teaching. By directly experiencing industry practices, these faculty can better prepare students for real-world applications. This program embodies the core idea of "teaching the teacher" to improve educational outcomes. Many of our Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) initiatives have been working in Western North Carolina for many years, and we are devastated by the impacts of Hurricane Helene on the agricultural and food systems of these beautiful mountain communities. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and now Milton as well, CEFS is connecting with farmers and community members and collaborating with our partners to best support those we serve in both the short and long term. We will continue to share more information as our plans develop. In the meantime, we hope the following resources and updates from our initiatives, research units, and partners will be helpful for farmers and other community members impacted by the hurricanes. We recognize that many are still without power and wifi and online resources are difficult to access. In addition to these resources, we are working with our CEFS team members and partners on the ground in Western NC to provide more direct support. Hosted by CEFS, Community Food Strategies, and the North Carolina Local Food Council, FIRE is a paid internship program that partners students with community-based organizations to create a more resilient and equitable food system.
