Scientists from the CDI were honored to present at a wide-ranging talk on cancer treatments of the future at the New York Genome Center on Oct. 1. The talks were presented as part of the New York Cancer Genomics Research Network Meeting. The moderator was Piero Dalerba, M.D., associate member of the CDI, whose work focuses on the discovery of biomarkers that are predictive of tumor response to anti-neoplastic drugs. Dalerba introduced talks by: Alvin Makohon-Moore, Ph.D., assistant member of the CDI; Benjamin Tycko, M.D., Ph.D., member of the CDI; and Hai-Hui (Howard) Xue, M.D., Ph.D, member of the CDI. The talks focused on their respective realms of expertise. Makohon-Moore presented on the experimental evolution of cancer in bioreactors in his lab; Tycko explained the value of using CRISPR as a research tool to home in on functional genetic variants that produce epigenetic changes, as a key adjunct to genome-wide disease association studies; and Xue spoke of immunological response in T cells and their effects in cancer development and potential treatments. About 200 men attended Hackensack Meridian Health’s Annual Men’s Health Event at the Hackensack Civic Center on September 21. The terrific turnout for the third yearly event brought attendance from a wide cross-section of men from North Jersey, including underserved members of the African-American and Latino communities. The event was co-organized by: the John Theurer Cancer Center’s Cancer Community Outreach and Engagement (CCOE) department; the Hackensack Meridian CDI and the Cancer Prevention Precision Control Institute; Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, John Theurer Cancer Center’s research partner and an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center; and the Hackensack University Medical Center Department of Urology. While the emphasis was on prostate cancer screening and prevention, a broader array of health prevention metrics particular to men were screened. As many as 23 vendors, including HMH departments and community partners, provided assistance and information. The many screenings that were provided at the event were of? no cost to participants thanks to Secaucus, NJ-based Quest Diagnostics, a business collaborator with Hackensack Meridian Health. Additional sponsors included medical technology company, Becton Dickinson; the Hackensack Health Department (Stigma Free); and the non-profit, Jamaica Organization of New Jersey. #outreach #menshealth #prostatecancer

Judy?Aschner, M.D.,?member of the Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI) and professor of pediatrics at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, is the 2024 honoree of the Liley Award from the Perinatal Research Society. As part of the award, Dr. Aschner gave the annual Liley Lecture?at the Society's 54th annual meeting last Friday, at the Renaissance Hotel in Providence, RI.?The theme for this year's conference was "Environmental Influences on Perinatal Health and Disease."?Setting the tone for the rest of the meeting, Dr. Aschner's?keynote address?was titled "Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes: A Focus on the Most Vulnerable"?in which she gave an?overview of perinatal environmental health risks and an introduction to the?Environmental Influences on?Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program, a massive NIH-funded national cohort started seven years ago. Dr. Aschner has been a principal?investigator of an ECHO cohort since its launch in 2016 and now leads a new pregnancy?cohort in ECHO with recruitment at Hackensack University?Medical Center.
