The #AarhusNLP Group at the Center for Humanities Computing, Aarhus Universitet, invites applications for ???????????????? three-year Postdoctoral Researcher positions. Starting date: June 1, 2025 (or as soon thereafter). The successful candidate will be physically based with the AarhusNLP Group on projects funded by the Digitaliseringsministeriets AI Initiative. This initiative stems from the 2024 national AI Strategy and is carried out in collaboration with major Danish universities, including Aarhus Universitet, K?benhavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen, Syddansk Universitet - University of Southern Denmark, and Alexandra Instituttet. The postdocs will work on cultural alignment and preference optimization of large language models (LLMs) for mid to low-resourced languages. The overarching goal is to develop advanced post-training techniques that align pre-trained transformer-based #LLMs with cultural values and linguistic conventions. By focusing on low-resource languages, this project addresses challenges such as data scarcity, cultural sensitivity, inclusivity, and the need for robust preference optimization methods that go beyond standard fine-tuning. ?????? ???????????????? ???????????????????? ??????????????:? ???????????????????? ?????????????????? ????????-???????????????? ????????????????????: Exploring and designing post-training strategies (e.g., Supervised Fine-Tuning, Reinforcement Learning, or novel alignment protocols) targeting Danish and other Nordic languages. ???????????????? ?????? ?????????????? ??????????????????: Embedding Nordic cultural norms, ethical considerations, and societal values into LLMs, ensuring respectful and context sensitive language generation. ???????????????????? ???????????????????????? ?????? ????????????????????: Enhancing model performance on non-differentiable properties, including user satisfaction, cultural appropriateness, and domain-specific quality measures (e.g., information retrieval or question-answering for Nordic use cases). ?? ?? How to #digitize... when your data is not easily accessible? At the?Center for Digital Textual Heritage, a recurring challenge we encounter is how to effectively digitize materials when data is dispersed across multiple locations or when it is not feasible to physically collect and centralize resources. ?? For scholars and practitioners in?digital humanities, one potential solution to this challenge is the use of the?#ScanTent - tool designed for reliable, high-quality document scanning. ScanTents are now produced in various models, including the version featured in the image, which is manufactured by?Transkribus by read-coop sce. ?? This method offers an accessible and efficient means of generating high-resolution digital images, particularly when a smartphone is the only available device. In the context of Danish?cultural and textual heritage, where valuable sources such as?bibles, psalm books, or the works of N.F.S. Grundtvig?may be difficult to access in centralized archives, such mobile digitization solutions provide a practical and scalable approach for preservation and scholarly research. ?? It's a sunny and beautiful final day of the #DHNB Conference 2025 and beautiful may also be the right word to sum up this week!?? After a beautiful conference dinner at Estonian National Museum last night, friday marks of the end of DHNB - Digital Humanities in the Nordic & Baltic Countries - a conference that indeed has been full conversations, questions and collaborations! ??Futhermore, we were also gathered for the last beautiful key note where Meelis Kull, University of Tartu talked us through "Humans and AI: similarities, differences, and why it matters", raising valid questions of whether AI truly understands meaning, how examining the similarities and differences between human and AI cognition might help guide our choices in using these systems, and how much transparency or explainability we realistically can expect? This perfectly sums up a beautifully executed conference here in Tartu, Estonia, where a week of discussions and critical reflections on our use of AI and computational methods leads us to a broader understanding of the possibilities and limits of our own field! ?? Thank you again for the amazing organizing team! Estonian Literary Museum (Mari V?ina, Kadri Vider, liisi laineste, Olha Petrovych) Estonian National Museum (Pille Runnel, PhD, Agnes Aljas) Institute of the Estonian Language (Martin Eessalu) Tallinn University (Andres Karjus) University of Tartu (Liina Lindstr?m, Joshua Wilbur) Estonian Society for Digital Humanities - We look forward to seeing you all next year in Aarhus, Denmark for #DHNB 2026! ?? #DHNB Day Two! ?? #Bias in historical data is often seen as a flaw, but what if we treated it as an?analytical tool? On day two of the DHNB - Digital Humanities in the Nordic & Baltic Countries Conference, Katrine Fr?kj?r Baunvig talked us through how computational methods can harness bias to uncover deeper historical insights. Using the?Digital Scholarly Edition (DSE) of Grundtvig’s Works, she discussed how data preservation strategies ensure that biases are not erased, but studied for their role in shaping cultural narratives. As #digital humanists, a key challenge for us is to evaluate how computational tools interact with bias—not as flaws to be eliminated, but as pathways to richer historical inquiry. The future of digital scholarship lies in maintaining a balance between the interpretive complexity of humanistic traditions and the power of #computational tools. Thank you to the fellow contributors to this paper: Krista, Jon and Kirsten ?? Additionally, the amazing Andrea Kocsis presented the keynote session: "More Than Feeling ? - Can Digital Humanities Rewrite Concepts from Non-digital Heritage Studies?" Andrea Kocsis?is Chancellor's Fellow in Humanities Informatics at The University of Edinburgh and her paper gave perspectives on how and when quantitative and qualitative methods might come to different conclusions, the reasons behind these instances, and points out the limitations of crowdsourced lexicon labels, lexicon-based methods and the lack of control studies and methodological triangulation. - thank you for raising very relevant and important questions! ?? Later tonight, we are looking forward to the #DHNB Annual General Meeting and the conference dinner at the Estonian National Museum Once again - thank you to the #DHNB 2025 organisers!
