Education Secretary Linda McMahon pushes for innovation in U.S. education by calling for the shutdown of the Department of Education, advocating for less bureaucracy and more state autonomy. However, AI’s transformative potential in learning is crucial to this vision. Federal investment in AI could revolutionize education by providing personalized, world-class tutoring for every student. Europe is walking a tightrope between innovation-led growth & protectionism. Its Competitiveness Compass plan aims for innovation-led growth but risks protectionism—stifling competition, slowing tech adoption, & harming long-term prospects. Real economic strength comes from open markets, not artificial barriers. Head of Digital Policy for UK & EU Ayesha Bhatti explains ??

Baroness Kidron's claim that copyright reform would be a "forced marriage on slave terms" is reckless. Not only does it ignore how copyright has actually worked for minority groups, but it also misrepresents what’s changing. The proposed reforms aren’t about expanding or shrinking creator rights—they’re about ensuring AI follows the same rules as everyone else. If the government wants to give creators more control over how their work is used, that’s a separate discussion—but it shouldn’t be an AI-only exception. Senior Policy Manager Hodan O. explains ??

U.S. export controls on AI may be backfiring. As China builds its own chip ecosystem, American firms risk losing out on the next wave of AI innovation. It's time to rethink the strategy before it undermines U.S. global competitiveness. Director Daniel Castro explains in his latest commentary ??

The Center for Data Innovation is happy to join Accelerate Science Now (ASN), a coalition dedicated to harnessing AI, data, and computing to accelerate scientific breakthroughs and deliver real benefits to Americans. ?? As our Senior Policy Manager Hodan O. explains, “AI is reshaping science, not just by accelerating what we know, but by reimagining the process of discovery itself. Earlier this week I was lucky enough to contribute to a panel discussion on AI and Data for Good. This was part of Meta's EU Innovation Day where they showcased the amazing innovations that come from AI and data. It was a real treat to hear the work of my fellow panellists through the Data for Good programme, tackling real-world issues like misinformation, climate change, government efficiency and pandemic resiliency. They made a clear case for why data access is so important. On the panel I discussed three policy actions for the new EU mandate: 1?? Simplification of the data sharing process, starting by streamlining all the data regulations that currently exist within the EU's regulatory ecosystem to make data-sharing the norm and unlock the data siloes created by GDPR. 2?? A recognition of the value that for-profit organisations bring to data for public good initiatives, in particular pointing out the admirable aims of the Data Governance Act, but its poor execution in restricting data altruism to non-profit organisations. 3?? Better policy actions that work collaboratively with technology, and not combatively. There is a strange dynamic within the EU that places technology at odds with fundamental rights protection. This has led to an understanding that regulation is the antithesis of innovation, which could not be farther from the truth. But to better address the needs of Europeans, policymakers need to approach technology regulation from a more neutral starting point. A big thank you to the Meta team (in particular Laura McGorman and Stacey Featherstone) and Patrick Grady for the opportunity, to my fellow panelists, and to Diva Tommei for being a wonderful moderator.
