  • John-Joel Ocfemia is this week’s Team Spotlight. Jon-Joel Ocfemia is a Graduate Student Researcher whose research interests include data-collection and analysis from household IoT devices. In May 2022, John-Joel earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Pace University. He additionally worked as a Document Care Specialist for CASO Document Management, where he built the foundation of his knowledge working with various scanners and IoT devices. In 2025, John-Joel hopes to develop his experience with digital forensic tools that recover and investigate data, such as Cellebrite, Magnet AXIOM, and FTK. Currently, John-Joel is the team captain of John Jay Esports’s Super Smash Bros Ultimate team. He led his team into the ECAC playoffs and is proud of his work honing his players’ skills, and he looks forward to finding out how his always-developing team will fare this semester. After having graduated with his bachelor’s, John-Joel remembers being a “jack-of-all trades” in the field of computer science until he found his passion for applying his technical skills to crime scene investigation through digital forensics. One of the most impactful pieces of advice John-Joel has received came from his dad, who emphasized that the best things in life are never handed to you. He learned from this advice to live in a mindset that he must be dedicated and effortful to truly appreciate what he has worked for.
