"'Can you walk me through your resume?' It sounds like an easy question, but don’t be fooled — your answer will determine whether the recruiter considers you a serious candidate." I live in DC, and all around me I am seeing folks impacted by reductions and layoffs. In addition, I teach undergraduate students who are actively seeking full-time positions and internships as summer approaches. So, this article from the Harvard Business Review is quite timely. A few salient points from this short piece include: - ?"...you need to deliver your answer in less than two minutes no matter how many jobs you’ve had and how many years you’ve worked..." - "Don’t repeat the same responsibilities from one job to the next; the goal is to show career progression which aligns with the role you are pursuing." - "When explaining job moves, it’s essential to provide context that demonstrates intentionality and alignment with your career growth." - "If you moved jobs every one to two years, your explanation for changing jobs must make sense and be delivered with confidence." - "If you were terminated in a mass layoff, you can mention that the company changed strategy or cut programs, and your job was impacted." - "Identify what sets you apart from other candidates and weave it into your narrative of past roles." It is my very sincere hope that this article is helpful for all who are currently seeking new opportunities.
