About Speaker:?Christopher LaRock, PhD is an?Associate Professor of Microbiology &?Immunology.?His lab?seeks to understand the fundamental principles governing host-microbe interactions. Their work has identified new virulence factor mechanisms, shown how manipulation of inflammation promotes colonization and transmission, developed novel anti-infectives, and discovered a new cell death program mediating effector-triggered immunity in the skin. These findings give insight into the basic biology of infection, the evolution of pathogenesis, in-born and pharmaceutical risk factors for infection, and better treatments for infections and non-infectious inflammatory diseases.

The Center for Childhood Infections and Vaccines (CCIV), led by Dr. Mehul Suthar, is dedicated to reducing and eradicating the disease burden caused by childhood pathogens through vaccination. Its primary strength lies in uniting clinicians and basic scientists to foster a multidisciplinary, collaborative research environment with the shared goal of combating global infectious diseases. The Center serves as a hub for sustainable research programs, securing grant opportunities, and achieving groundbreaking discoveries that enhance child health worldwide. CCIV leverages its research expertise and collaborates with other institutional entities like the Emory Vaccine Center, Emory National Primate Research Center, Emory Center for AIDS Research, and the Antimicrobial Resistance Center. It also taps into the resources and networks of Emory University, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Georgia Tech, Morehouse School of Medicine, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Together, these partnerships support three core mission areas: Advancing understanding of infectious diseases, immunological mechanisms, and the development of vaccines and treatments for childhood pathogens. Building and maintaining a critical mass of investigators focused on infectious diseases, vaccines, and emerging global health issues. Click link to register: https://lnkd.in/ekC9a2CE Title: "Dissecting the role of neutrophils in Mycobacterium tuberculosis immunopathology" About Speaker: Dr. Rachel Kinsella completed her PhD at the University of Alberta, where she characterized mechanisms of pathogenesis in Acinetobacter baumannii with Dr. Mario Feldman. She then pursued postdoctoral training at Washington University in St. Louis with Dr. Christina Stallings, focusing on the role of the early immune response in controlling Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and identifying bacterial factors that drive disease by altering early innate immune responses. During this time, Rachel identified host immune mechanisms that contribute to control of infection by suppressing neutrophil-dominated inflammation and regulating neutrophil effector functions during M. tuberculosis infection.
