Sharing a little snippet from Travis Baird at the EMPath 2024 Disrupting Poverty Conference. We asked the panel what they believed to be barriers in their roles as Intersectional Professionals. "It's this challenge of who's being viewed as being biased? In a lot of these different aspects of the work you have to be seen as objective. Are you being too personal? Are you too close to the problem? It's really hard to grow up poor and black and someone say to you, "do you care too much about poor black people?" A lot of this happens. We've created this system where research. due diligence, and objectivity is kind of put at the top of the pyramid. And I have to fight. Yeah I am biased in supporting people who look like me. I am biased in supporting people who are like my mother, my uncle, my cousins, and my friends. Why is that a problem, is the question I have. I think sometimes in philanthropy we're biased as well. I watch people using for-profit analytical measurement on a nonprofit. Why would we do that? Why do we hold nonprofits to this standard that we don't hold a for-profit company to? How come we don't call that bias? It's just a tension that's at play. I acknowledge it, I I wear it on my sleeves. I try to just share the stories as to why and hopefully move my group even incrementally forward into [understanding] it's not biased, it's love, it's care. We should be loving and caring to whoever we're trying to support no matter how close to them we are.

This is a gathering for Intersectional Professionals (someone with personal or lived experience of their work) and selected allies to celebrate our first year of organizing, to hear about the work we have already done, and to help us envision where we'll go next! To celebrate the first birthday of the Network of Intersectional Professionals,* we are excited to announce that we are planning?a half-day, online convening on Friday June 14th!??Please mark your calendars for a planned start time of noon ET. Registration will open in May, but for now you should know the following: - We'll have member-run presentations and discussions around topics like Joy & Replenishment, Intersectional Professional Identity, and the core skills we need to thrive.? - We'll be making the convening semi-open, so we welcome potential members, interested allies, potential funders, etc.? - We'll be encouraging people to throw watch parties locally to help bolster, or even start, local Network chapters. *If you're unfamiliar with the idea of Intersectional Professionals, you can read more here: https://lnkd.in/eZicBqyg

Sharing far and wide: A call for Americorps Fellows to apply and work with Massachusetts CASA as their host site. Charles Lerner is a founding member of the Intersectional Professional community and a strong leader with heart and ethics. Note from Charles that "we're REALLY hoping to attract candidates who identify as BIPOC and/or were in foster care as children and/or parents who at some point had their child/ren in foster care. They should be in Massachusetts and able to meet in the Boston area approximately twice a month. Otherwise, the position can be remote."
