Assistant Professor, Program Leader Nonformal and Community-Based Education with Applied Sciences, Technology & Education and Biosecurity Emphasis with the Center for Anticipatory Intelligence
Wrapping up our first semester of Biosecurity I with the Center for Anticipatory Intelligence at USU. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of students to work through the content for the first time. We’ve heard from some incredible guest lecturers Ryan Jackson Briana Bowen Patrick Belmont and Matt Berrett. Jessica Felts provided a hands-on simulation on African Swine Fever and Kerry A. Rood, MS, DVM, MPH, Dipl. ACVPM gave us an up-close look of the USU Caine Dairy. I can’t wait for their final presentations.

Working with ADAC-ARCTIC is a dream—their capacity for student engagement continues to inspire our staff. We were thrilled to host them in our Center for Anticipatory Intelligence at USU CAI 5000 class. I can’t wait to have them back! Utah State University Jeannie Johnson Jeffrey Taylor
Last week, we were honored to be invited as guest speakers at Utah State University’s Center for Anticipatory Intelligence (CAI). ADAC-ARCTIC Assistant Director, Joseph Cook and Associate Director of Education and Workforce Programs, David Leiva briefed 70 students, staff, and faculty as part of the CAI course of study on ADAC-ARCTIC and DHS. Discussion included topics of climate change, emergency management in the Arctic, emerging risks and threats, current ADAC-ARCTIC projects, and future challenges facing the Arctic, among others. They completed a hands-on tabletop exercise centered on the 2022 Typhoon Merbok in Alaska, taking into account various local elements and operational components of emergency response and assessed Homeland Security outcomes. USU is home to three students who are also ADAC-ARCTIC fellows: Spencer Anderson, Logan Bolan, and Aubony Slack. Congratulations to them and all their hard work. We want to thank the gracious hosts for inviting our team and we look forward to future collaborations with USU. #DHS_COE_research DHS Science and Technology Directorate University of Alaska Anchorage?

?? Exciting Milestone for Intermountain Intelligence, Industry, and Security Consortium (I3SC) at Their Fall Symposium! Congratulations to the Intermountain Intelligence, Industry, and Security Consortium (I3SC) team for hosting another successful Fall Symposium! Jeannie Johnson and Ryan Vogel, Directors, kicked off the symposium by providing updates and emphasizing the significance of industry engagement to the program's success. This impactful event brought together industry leaders, faculty, and students to dive into discussions on curriculum innovation, enrollment growth, and the integration of valuable industry feedback from previous events. Attendees engaged in dynamic breakout sessions, exploring critical topics like Generative AI in the Workplace, Professional Skills & Development, and Substantive Curriculum Development. These discussions paved the way for deeper collaboration, and a networking session offered students a unique chance to connect with supporting employers, student groups, and industry professionals. The evening’s highlight was an inspiring keynote from Eric Levesque Strider Technologies', who spoke on resilience and success, emphasizing Utah’s growing influence in the security and intelligence sector. In recognition of I3SC’s achievements, Strider Technologies announced a generous $300,000 donation over three years to fund student scholarships—an incredible boost to the future of Utah’s security and intelligence workforce! Thank you Eric and Greg L. and the employees at Strider for your continued support and engagement. Talent Ready Utah’s own Jimmy McDonough, Assistant Commissioner of Education & Workforce Programs, proudly represented us at this important event. We’re thrilled to see I3SC’s continued success and its impact on Utah’s security and intelligence landscape. The I3SC program is funded by TRU Deep Tech Talent Initiative. #TalentReadyUtah #I3SC #Center for Anticipatory Intelligence at USU #UVU Open Source Intelligence Center #WorkforceDevelopment #GenerativeAI #StriderTechnologies #StudentSuccess #UtahInnovation

At yesterday’s inaugural Zero Gravity 47G Summit, one of the panels featured leading voices in intelligence and innovation to discuss the evolving landscape of national security. Moderated by Jeannie Johnson, Director of the Center for Anticipatory Intelligence at USU, the panel included Strider CEO and co-founder Greg L.; David Vigneault, Strider Managing Director—Global Intelligence Unit and former Head of Canadian Intelligence; and Sue Gordon, Founder of GordonVentures and former Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence. A key theme in their discussion was that agility and speed are replacing secrecy as today’s strategic advantage, positioning private sector innovation not only as an economic driver but as a vital component of national security. With rapid advancements in AI and data technology, industries must take an active role in protecting proprietary information and shaping policies that secure our shared future. This requires collaboration across academia, government, and the private sector to tackle increasingly complex, global challenges. Strider is proud to be at the forefront of this new frontier, leveraging data as a cornerstone for advancing and safeguarding democratic values.

Had an amazing day at the 47G Zero Gravity Summit today! I met so many incredible new people and had the chance to deepen relationships with others. I wish I could do this more often, but I’m exhausted! Quick summary of my takeaways: ?? Draper Labs is doing phenomenal work in national security—absolutely mind-blowing research! ?? Now is the time for clean energy to advance. With bipartisan support, projected demand outpacing supply, and national security implications, the stage is set. The president of Torus has truly turned his passion for renewable energy into a movement. ?? Idaho National Laboratory stands as our regional expert in nuclear power. Special thanks to Steve from their board (a true nuclear expert) for taking the time to answer my questions. ?? Utah has critical mineral resources that the nation needs. Energy Fuels Inc is ramping up uranium production and needs to develop a talent pipeline to support this growth. Talent Ready Utah (TRU) looks forwarding to collaborating with them to develop pathways and a pipeline. ?? Utah Valley University is launching an innovative business degree program that will be the first of its kind in the nation! ?? The Center for Anticipatory Intelligence at USU and Intermountain Intelligence, Industry, and Security Consortium (I3SC) at Utah Valley University are not only preparing students to meet workforce demands but also equipping them to anticipate security risks and learn how to prevent, mitigate, and secure. ?? Utah Tech University is aligning and partnering closely with industry to support their region’s economic growth and development. Engineering, tech, genomics, cyber scada, advance manufacturing.… ?? We must intentionally encourage and promote careers in Aerospace, Defense, and Critical Minerals to females and underrepresented communities, including neurodiverse individuals. ??The Rosie Project and BreakLine Education, two of Talent Ready Utah funded Return to Work programs, are focused on serving military spouses and veterans. These programs promote the skills and assets these candidates offer to industry and our continuously developing partnerships and opportunities to connect talent with employers. ?? Utah is a model for successful public-private partnerships! #ZeroGravitySummit #47G #Innovation #Energy #NationalSecurity #Utah #WorkforceDevelopment #CleanEnergy #Aerospace #DiversityInSTEM #HigherEd #PublicPrivatePartnerships #CriticalMinerals #EconomicGrowth #MilitarySpouses #ReturntoWork

How do you train yourself to anticipate future problems and proactively lead others through them, rather than react instinctively? Agility is the basis of the teachings at Center for Anticipatory Intelligence at USU. I feel particularly lucky to have gone through the program at the crux of COVID-19, AI emergence, and the start of the Ukraine War, where we were anticipating what to expect and lead in real-time during these pivotal moments of the last decade. #AnticipatoryIntelligence #CAI

In the past, people were hired and promoted based on ability. In the future, the more valuable currency will be agility. We should bet on people with the motivation to learn and the flexibility to change. From my Q&A at the Oslo Business Forum
