Meet alumnus Kyle Ransom, whose research, mentored by Dr. Jeannie Johnson, explored Chinese marketing of surveillance technology in Latin America. Funded by the U.S. Department of Defense Minerva Research Initiative, Kyle utilized the Cultural Topography Analytic Tool to examine how China markets AI-enabled surveillance tech. His work provides valuable insights into the societal and security implications of these technologies for U.S. policymakers and military leadership. Kyle’s key research findings have been presented to U.S. military officials overseeing China-Latin America relations at Fort Bragg. Reflecting on his research approach, Kyle emphasized the power of interdisciplinary work, stating: "This kind of multi-disciplinary research is essential to tackle the complexity of 21st-century problem sets. Exploring the intersection of technology, international relations, and culture revealed new insights that would not have been possible by investigating these fields individually. I would encourage students to pursue research that stretches their disciplinary expertise." #USUResearch #YoUR #YearofUndergraduateResearch #ThisIsResearch #Celebrating50Years #USUAggies #50Faces

Strider CEO Greg L. and COO Eric Levesque recently sat down with Jeannie Johnson at Silicon Slopes to discuss the critical intelligence gap facing private industry and how Strider is stepping up to fill it. ? Companies are on the frontline in today’s geopolitical competition. IP, talent, and supply chains are under constant threat from state-sponsored actors representing competing nations—but industry lacks access to the intelligence needed to defend itself. ? That’s the gap Strider is closing. ? Watch this clip from their conversation to hear how open-source data, AI, and strategic intelligence are transforming how businesses, government, and academic institutions secure innovation and their critical assets on a global scale. Thanks Gert-Jan B. -- terrific to spend time with your team at the SANS CTI Summit!
Most interesting observation from CTI Summit: Systems thinking is FINALLY entering CTI! After a decade of frameworks and tools, teams are finally realizing: 1) There can be no effective threat or risk management unless you understand the intricate 'system' of an organization; crucial for dependencies between threat, vulnerability and process. 2) Feedback loops are crucial in understanding unintended consequences of ones (inter)actions, not just to simply improve the day-day activities. 3) You can only defend an organization proactively if you understand how everything 'clicks' together. Change is constant, start figuring out what changes where (and how). I've been talking about this for a while, so it was truly refreshing to now also hear Jeannie Johnson, Scott R. & Chandler McClellan talk about it. WHY we need methodologies was clear. HOW we can apply certain methods was also addressed (see image from Scott & Chandlers talk). The thing always lacking, mostly because you don't have enough time during these conference talks, is WHAT. WHAT can I do today, so today is already a bit better than yesterday? Here's one of my takes: Complex systems need simple visualizations. Start out extremely simple, such as using Attack Flow from Center for Threat-Informed Defense. Simple beats complex. That's why more organizations invest in business process modeling. That's why our threat scenarios resonate with decision-makers. That's why practical tools like Attack Flow work. If you can pickup one skill this year; it should be Systems Thinking. Alternatively, if you want to read a good book on it without going through piles of traditional Systems Thinking voodoo - have a look at 'Simple Complexity' from William Donaldson, PhD. You will find it to be surprisingly accessible if new to this matter. Great job SANS Digital Forensics and Incident Response team on putting this together! Want more insights on systems thinking + cybersecurity? You should join my weekly newsletter! I curate insights at the nexus of decision-making, risk management, behavioral psychology, creativity and systems thinking. We are incredibly thankful for the contributions that Greg L. and Eric Levesque from Strider Technologies have made to the Intermountain Intelligence, Industry, and Security Consortium (I3SC) and the Center for Anticipatory Intelligence at USU. We are thrilled to honor them today as the I3SC Outstanding Industry Partner for 2025! This award recognizes Strider's exceptional contribution to advancing and securing Utah's intellectual capital and establishing the Strider Fellows program. Starting this fall, their infusion of $150,000 in scholarship funding will allow us to recruit and support top talent from across the nation and deliver the industry-aligned workforce that Utah needs. #StriderFellows #I3SC #CenterforAnticipatoryIntelligence

The Center for Anticipatory Intelligence places a great emphasis on hands-on learning and ensuring our students can excel in a high-stakes environment. Every Fall semester, CAI 5000 American National Security Framework students participate in a capstone simulation that replicates the fast-paced environment of the U.S. Intelligence Community and learn from industry professionals. Check out an article about this year's simulation by USU College of Humanities and Social Sciences' Andrea D.! https://lnkd.in/gCmwhvd4
