Medium has published an update on their partner program to include 77 additional countries, including India. The last time they mentioned this, the update got delayed indefinitely. But now, it looks like it's finally happening. I have been writing on Medium since 2017. That's a whopping 8 years ago. Writers from India can finally monetize on Medium. This update is being pushed on a rolling basis to all users. Back in November 2017, I created The Research Nest as an organization that primarily operates as a Medium publication. One of the objectives of it was to establish a brand and distribution on Medium to help monetize young students and writers in the future, when Medium opens its partner program to India. I thought it would be a 2-3 year journey. We are here now after 7.5 years. If you are a writer in STEM, feel free to send your drafts to TRN. How TRN helps you: - Provide distribution via our existing audience, history of content, social media and search results. We often rank in the first page of web searches for the given topics. - I personally curate and promote good content to my broader audience too. - I also help with editing your content and provide feedback and suggestions to refine the work further. To know more about the kind of content we cover, the process to get added as a writer, and to submit your work, just visit the home page of the publication and check out these two articles: 1. Introducing The Research Nest 2.0 2. Write with us You should be able to spot them easily. To find the home page of the publication, you can simply Google search, "The Research Nest" or search it on Medium.

?? Microsoft Devblogs: Similarity Search with FAISS and Azure SQL Summary: FAISS (Facebook AI Similarity Search) is a powerful tool for searching similar items within large datasets. It supports various indexes, including flat indexes, hierarchical navigable small world indexes, and inverted file indexes, which can be used for efficient similarity search and clustering of dense vectors. To use FAISS, you need to load your data and choose an encoding model, such as the pre-trained "all-MiniLM-L6-v2" model from SentenceTransformers. You then create a FAISS index using one of the supported indexes, which can be stored on GPU for faster execution. Once the index is created, you can perform similarity searches by defining a function that encodes the input query, searches the index, and retrieves the top results. This allows you to efficiently search for similar items within your data, making it suitable for applications such as semantic search, recommendation systems, and clustering. ?? ArXiv AI: Theia: Distilling Diverse Vision Foundation Models for Robot Learning Summary: Researchers have developed a new vision foundation model called Theia to help robots learn from visual inputs. Unlike previous models that focus on specific tasks like classification or segmentation, Theia combines knowledge from multiple vision tasks to create rich and diverse visual representations. These representations can be used in downstream robot learning applications, allowing for better performance with less training data and smaller models. In experiments, Theia outperformed its teacher models and other robot learning models, and the researchers also found that a certain level of "chaos" or high entropy in the model's feature distributions is associated with improved robot learning performance. ?? Kubernetes: 10 Years of Kubernetes Summary: Ten years ago, Kubernetes was born on June 6th, 2014, when its first commit was pushed to GitHub. Since then, it has grown to become one of the largest open-source projects in the world, with over 88,000 contributors from more than 8,000 companies across 44 countries. The project's history began with a convergence of technologies, including Moore's Law and application complexity, which led Google engineers to create a form of isolation in the Linux kernel called containers. Docker popularized containerization, but it was still lacking an open-source container orchestration system, which led to the creation of Kubernetes. Over the years, the project has undergone significant changes, from its early days as a challenging-to-use project to its current state with numerous extension points and custom resource definitions. Today, Kubernetes offers more flexibility than ever before, with support for multiple container runtimes, CSI storage, CNI networking, and more. The community continues to grow and adapt, prioritizing changes that improve user experiences and enhance sustainability. Looking ahead, the project is poised to evolve with the changing world of application development, potentially incorporating AI and distributed computing workloads.
