On the final day of the Center for Black Educator Development #BMEC #BMEC2024. Sharif El-Mekki and I with a little message.
Launched in June 2019, the Center for Black Educator Development is revolutionizing education by dramatically increasing the number of Black educators so that Black and other disenfranchised students can reap the full benefits of a quality public education. Our mission is to rebuild the Black teacher pipeline to achieve educational equity and racial justice. To achieve this, we know the practice of education itself must be rethought and unshackled via: Revolutionary Black educators teaching in every school throughout the country. Revolutionary teaching practices that unleash the power of diverse cultural insights and anti-discriminatory mindsets. Revolutionary policies that liberate us from constraints. real and imagined.

On the final day of the Center for Black Educator Development #BMEC #BMEC2024. Sharif El-Mekki and I with a little message.
On our final day of #BMEC2024, our CEO, Sharif El-Mekki, honored COSEBOC (Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color)’s Ron Walker with this year’s Liberation Award. In his speech, Walker encouraged the audience to tap into an important form of AI: Ancestral Intelligence. “Let’s continue to be liberators. Let's continue to draw on the Ancestral Intelligence.” (Photos by Josh Stewart/EdPost)
We kicked off the second day of #BMEC2024 with a passionate panel conversation on the challenges and obstacles of being Black male teachers in U.S. schools. Thanks to Dr. Tyrone Howard for moderating the discussion with Dr. Marvin Lynn, Dr. Ed Brockenbrough, and Dr. Howard Fuller. If you're attending the convening in Philly, tell us about your favorite breakout sessions.
DONATE.? Today, we confront a pressing national crisis: the lack of #BlackTeachers in our classrooms, a disparity that impacts all students – including Black children. The absence of diverse educators deprives students of role models and culturally relevant learning experiences essential for their success. Undoubtedly, #WeNeedBlackTeachers! The Center for Black Educator Development (CBED) is committed to reversing this trend by recruiting, training, and retaining Black teachers across the nation. We invite you to support this mission and help us reach our $25,000 end-of-year goal. Your generous contribution will directly empower programs like the Teaching Academy, #FreedomSchools Literacy Academy, CBED’S Fellowship Program and providing critical pathways for young Black talent to enter the teaching profession. Join us in shaping a future where every student—regardless of race—has access to an equitable and empowering education. Consider donating today and be a part of this transformative movement:? https://lnkd.in/gka7RF9t #WeNeedBlackTeachers #BMEC2024 #EducationalEquity #DonateNow #BlackMenInEd #TeacherDiversity #BlackMaleEducators
We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to Philly today and filling up these seats for #BMEC2024! Registration opens at noon and the Opening Plenary starts at 3! See you soon!
#BMEC2024 kicks off TOMORROW! We cannot wait to welcome approximately 1,200 educator activists and activated allies to Philadelphia for the largest Black male educator convening in the nation. The #BlackMenInEd Convening's theme, "Deacons For Our Future: DreamKeepers Yesterday, Today, and Forever," is inspired by the 30th anniversary of Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings’s book, “Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African American Children” and the 70th anniversary of the landmark Brown vs Board ruling. Follow us starting tomorrow as we gather!

Our CEO, Sharif El-Mekki, says now, more than ever, our school teachers need support that’s financial, cultural and structural. His guest commentary in The Philadelphia Citizen shares why it’s time for a new teaching social contract — a renewed commitment to honoring, supporting, and elevating the teaching profession in our social and cultural fabric.
The Center for Black Educator Development's CEO, Sharif El-Mekki, shared his forecast with the new administration's pledge to close the Department of Education.
