    Brilliant event (Vietnam Climate Tech Investment Platform) - thanks to New Energy Nexus, VMO Holdings, Clickable Impact, and our The CARE-WWF Alliance colleagues from WWF-Viet Nam Surprised that Vietnam attracted 19% of all VC capital in Asia (2022). Blew my mind, however, that 2015-2023 saw a mere $92,6M invested into climate startups in a country consistently ranked among the top five most climate vulnerable countries - even if these last few years saw investments mushrooming by ~400% p.a. (Kudos for that presentation Jason Martin Lusk and do please share the report link below!). Came back super inspired from the matchmaking session, especially by companies that also tackle social challenges through climate tech - including enfarm Agritech, who’s making IoT soil sensing affordable to coffee & durian smallholder farmers across Central Highlands. Can’t wait for CARE in Vietnam & CARE Danmark to explore many more partnerships!

    The German electricity market design is going to see fundamental changes in the coming month and years. Here's what it will mean for energy storage in Germany. 11 days ago, the German government kicked off a consultation on the country's future electricity market design. It is based on a stakeholder process called "the Climate-Neutral Electricity System Platform" that was started in February of 2023. Why does Germany need an electricity market reform? ? Implementation of EU Market Design Reform ? Lack of investments in dispatchable capacity ? Current produce-and-forget renewable support not future-proof ? Lack of flexibility in the power system What are the change proposals? Area 1: Investment framework for renewables 4 options presented 1?? Adding claw-back to the current system 2?? Production depended CfD 3?? Production independend CfD 4?? ?? Capacity payments with a production-independent refinancing contribution -> The solution preferred by the government My storage take: Clear shift of past. Renewables would receive support based on kW and full market exposure on optimizing revenue from generated kWh is on the renewable developer -> This could drive lots of co-location as energy shifting becomes part of renewable asset business cases. Area 2: Investment framework for dispatchable capacity (aka. capacity mechanism) 4 options presented 1?? Peak Price Hedging (aka. RAM in CAISO) 2?? Decentral Capacity Market (aka. French model) 3?? Central Capacity Market (aka. UK, Poland, Belgium) 4?? ?? Hybrid Model between Central and Decentral market (first in the world) My storage take: Can the German do anything the easy way? No. For all four mechanism I can see good and bad; it really depends on how the mechanisms are designed in detail (aka. de-rating factors). Paper clearly warns of need to avoid bad CM market design for storage, hence I'm positive that this can become a great new incentive for storage. Area 3: Local Signals 3 options presented 1???? Time-based/regionally differentiated network charges 2???? Regional signals in funding programs 3???? Integration of loads into the redispatch -> all to be implemented My storage take: What did take us so long? No direct impact for storage, but stronger local price divergence will make things interesting for optimizers. Area 4: (demand-side) Flexibility 3 options presented 1???? Implement time-variable and innovative tariff models 2???? Grid fees supporting system flexibility 3???? Increase industrial flexibility via grid fees -> all to be implemented My storage take: The options are just areas of activity, but no proposals yet. The government will come up with a Flexibility Agenda, and I would expect that energy storage will take an important role in this upcoming agenda. So what's next? - The consultation is open until September 6th - Legislative proposals for CM introduction in October - Other activities likely to take longer any might be postponed until after the election?!

    Overcoming the Financing Hurdles of Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) As the global push towards net-zero targets gains momentum, the demand for reliable long duration energy storage (LDES) solutions has never been higher. LDES technologies, which provide crucial backup for renewable energy sources like wind and solar, are essential for maintaining a stable power supply. Despite significant advancements, securing the necessary funding to bring these technologies to commercial scale remains a daunting challenge. The roadblocks are clear: 1. Limited Business Models: While storage solutions up to 12 hours can leverage wholesale market fluctuations, seasonal storage systems face challenges due to their bulky nature and slower response times, making them less suitable for ancillary services. 2. Utility Hesitation: Utilities, despite showing interest, have been slow to commit to substantial investments or long-term contracts. The cautious approach stems from the risks associated with new technologies and the uncertainty of market adoption. 3. Government and Venture Capital: While there has been notable support from governments and venture capital, with nearly $800M invested, it is not sufficient to bridge the funding gap.     ?? At the Climate and Energy Innovation Summit 2024 organized by New Energy Nexus, I was struck by an impressive statement from edec, a startup focused on building energy efficiency. Their presentation highlighted the significant challenges climate tech startups face in securing funding from venture capital ecosystems that are more accustomed to growth models in IT/IoT, edtech, and fintech sectors. The incomplete VC ecosystem for climate tech underscores the need for a tailored approach to funding sustainable innovations. The conventional growth models in other tech sectors do not necessarily translate to the unique timelines and impact-driven goals of climate startups. During a panel discussion, GIZ Energy Support Programme - Viet Nam’s Programme Director, Philipp Munzinger, highlighted three points: ?? ? ?? ?????? ???????????????? ?????? ?????? ?????????? ?????? ????: For the initial PDP8 300 MW target of grid-connected BESS, ancillary services and #energyshifting are the top services to focus on. These can provide faster and more cost-effective solutions for stabilizing the systems than grid expansion. ?? ? ?? ???????? ?????????????????? ???? ???????? ???????????? ??????????????????????????????: Beyond in-front-of-the-meter solutions, BESS have significant potential behind the meter in Viet Nam. The anticipated adoption of the Direct Power Purchase Agreement (DPPA) mechanism, the growing industrial demand for #greenpower, and declining BESS costs indicate a burgeoning market for hybrid solutions on the individual prosumer side. ? ?? ?????????????????? ?????????????????????????? ???????????????????????? ???? ?????????????????????????? ?????????????? ??????????????????????: There is a growing trend of home storage systems and aggregation services, where fleets of home storage systems from thousands of households are bundled and intelligently controlled to provide the power grid with digital and decentralized buffer storage. This model supports #grid stability and RE integration and offers additional income for private storage owners next to the existing home storage benefits. Such aggregated, virtual power plant models show great promise for Viet Nam as its battery storage market evolves.?? ? With opportunities to diversify renewable sources and develop beneficial remuneration models, BESS can drive a more flexible, affordable, and secure power system in Viet Nam.     ?? **Global Investment in Clean Tech: A Path to Net Zero** The International Energy Agency projects global investment in clean technologies to reach $2 trillion this year, nearly double the amount spent on fossil fuels. However, this is still less than half the $4.5 trillion annual investment needed by the early 2030s to achieve net zero goals. Despite the significant growth in wind and solar capacity, no major economy is currently on track to meet its 2030 emissions reduction targets, according to Wood Mackenzie. The pace of change remains slow, with much of the action expected to accelerate post-2030.     "Global investment in clean technologies is on track to hit $2tn this year, according to the International Energy Agency, which is almost twice the amount being spent on fossil fuels. Even so, this is still less than half the estimated $4.5tn of annual investment needed by the early 2030s to achieve net zero goals. ...Still, no major economy is on track to meet its 2030 emissions reduction targets, let alone net zero, according to an analysis by Wood Mackenzie last year. “The pace of change just isn’t there,” says Lindsey Entwistle, senior research analyst at the energy consultancy. “It’s very weighted towards action accelerating post-2030 if countries want to meet their targets. ...There’s no point looking at the size of the current fossil fuel system to work out where things are headed,” says Kingsmill Bond, at RMI. “That’s akin to saying in the 1920s, ‘there are 10mn horses out there and only 100,000 cars; it’s all about horses, isn’t the horse the future?’. You’ve got to look at the change.””
