Very happy to share that our new paper describing chromosome folding in mitosis has been published in Cell by Cell Press: https://dlvr.it/TJkJ8P! In this project, we were able to see in the microscope how mitotic chromosomes fold to establish their compact "X"-shape during cell division. We found that this process could be explained by Condensin protein complexes extruding extremely large and extensively overlapping DNA loops to back-fold DNA. Because these loops self-repel each other, the characteristic rod shape appears. Thanks to Andreas Brunner, Natalia Morero and the rest of the Jan Ellenberg lab for this amazing collaboration, and EMBL for this excellent highlight of the study.
Did you know DNA must form overlapping loops to give rise to the well-known X-shape of chromosomes? New research from EMBL Heidelberg's Ellenberg Group has used a novel chromatin tracing method called LoopTrace to directly visualise chromosomes in dividing cells, providing new insights into the process of chromosome formation.
