A core component of our Personal Care Assistant (PCA) Plus Training Program is Personal Professional Development (PPD) in which our trainees learn vital skills to help them thrive in their future workplaces. Our most recent group of PCA Plus graduates were presented with their PPD certificates by our very own Barbara Shaw-Dorso last Wednesday, January 15! Designed and led by the City’s Community & Economic Development Office (CEDO) and funded by a competitive grant from the National League of Cities (NLC), the six-week workforce training program utilized AI-powered technology to provide real-time translation and captions to deliver the PCA Plus training to underserved Arabic-speaking residents. Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak announced that the City of Burlington, Vermont will open a cold weather emergency shelter at the Miller Center at 130 Gosse Court this weekend. Hours of operation will be Saturday, December 21 and Sunday, December 22 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 AM. The National Weather Service is currently forecasting evening temperatures diving below zero with windchill on Saturday, December 21, and Sunday, December 22. The State of Vermont defines an extreme cold weather emergency using a threshold of –20 degrees Fahrenheit with the windchill factor. The City is acting to open additional shelter this weekend based on a number of factors, including: current estimates indicate upwards of 250 people are sleeping unsheltered in the region, with many rough sleeping; efforts to stand up additional low barrier shelter have been delayed until after the New Year; the State motel program is at capacity with upwards of 350 eligible households unable to get a room. While the City is leading this effort, it would not be possible without the partnership of the?CVOEO?or the funding support of the Vermont Agency of Human Services. For more shelter information: Call 211 or VT Economic Services at 1-800-479-615 Please reach out to Sarah Russell, Special Assistant to End Homelessness at 802-829-6326 or srussell@burlingtonvt.gov
