The Cedar LNG Project is a partnership between the Haisla Nation and Pembina Pipeline Corporation to develop a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility in Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada, within the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation. Strategically positioned to leverage Canada’s abundant natural gas supply and BC’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure, Cedar LNG will be powered by renewable electricity from BC Hydro, making it one of the lowest carbon intensity LNG facilities in the world. “The Cedar LNG project will be the largest First Nation-owned infrastructure project in Canada, creating jobs, contracting and other economic opportunities for the Haisla Nation, the community of Kitimat, neighbouring Indigenous Nations, and the local region,” says Smith. “Cedar LNG represents long-term growth for our region in a way that protects our land and environment, and we are excited to see the project move forward in its environmental assessment process with innovative technology and reduced environmental footprint.”

As we recognize Canada’s 4th annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, I encourage us all to think beyond the common ways we commemorate this day – wearing orange, attending a luncheon, making a social post, and listening and learning. If we are to overcome the challenges ahead of us as a country, we must be ready to commit to do more and take meaningful action. Reconciliation today – nearly 20 years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action was released – means enabling Indigenous people to truly participate in the Canadian economy – as owners and decision makers, not just participants. This means providing communities with access to government funding programs, financing and other benefits that many other non-Indigenous industry players have received for years. We recognize that to be treated as equal, we also need to be prepared to take on significant risks associated with developing major projects. Something that the Haisla have proven with Cedar LNG, alongside our partner Pembina, that Indigenous communities are willing, and highly capable of doing. When I look back to what we - the Haisla Nation have achieved, I will not rest until any community who wants to pursue projects like ours, has the ability to find the right partners, get a seat at the table, access to capital, and to be true owners in their economic future. There is no longer an alternative for us.

Cedar LNG today announced that it has issued a Notice to Proceed to the engineering, procurement, and construction contractors following the finalization of long-term commercial offtake agreements.
