Since 1976, Houston Parks Board has invested over $258 million supporting over 250 parks & creating access to more than 14,000 acres of parks & trails. Through Bayou Greenways, they will connect 150 miles of trails along Houston’s major bayous to bring 1.5 million people within 1.5 miles of a greenway. They work on projects, big & small, including Bayou Greenways, community programs, studies of Houston’s parks, & care for existing parks. #community #environment #houston #cechtx

Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens is a tranquil, 393-acre public botanical gardens with trails meandering through beautiful natural areas & landscaped garden beds. Located in Humble, Texas, the gardens are managed by Harris County Precinct 3 & are open daily with free admission. Mercer Arboretum is a great place for a family outing & getting outside to appreciate the wonder of nature. And, since they share a parking lot with The Baldwin Boettcher Library ?? ?? ??? The CEC Member Spotlight of the Week is The Woods Project, Inc.! The Woods Project creates wilderness exploration experiences for high school students that promote academic success, college & career readiness, & life-long thriving. ?? ?? ?? Partnering with Houston high schools, they serve high percentages of low-income students, who are most likely to benefit from the experience. Participants are from economically-disadvantaged households & range from 14 to 18 years of age. On average, 70% of participants are Latino, 20% are African-American, & the remainder are of mixed race or other ethnicity. Utilizing trained volunteers & teachers as trip leaders allows for an extremely dynamic & efficient program that provides student participants with positive role models & exposes them to a larger perspective. #community #Environment #houston #cechtx
