Fantastic Finland: A Growing Hub for Carbon Removal With 7 companies and 6 projects, Finland is emerging as a key player in durable carbon removal—not just in the Nordic region, but across Europe. ?? Finland’s ambitious climate plan aims for net zero by 2035, targeting the removal of 21Mt of CO?e by then. Biochar dominates its CDR market, with Finnish suppliers selling over 28,000 tonnes by the end of Q3 2024. The country also leads in research and innovation, driving CDR advancements alongside its Nordic neighbors. ?? From global CDR registry Puro.earth to?Carbo Culture, home to one of Europe’s largest biochar plants with a capacity of 3,000 tonnes per year, Finland is setting benchmarks for scaling global carbon removal. ?? Notably,?Carbofex?was the first supplier in CDR.fyi's database, recording a transaction of 100 tonnes of CDR with Swiss Re over five years ago. ?? A big shoutout to Finnish innovators like?Carbonaide,?Soletair Power,?Nordic Impact Oy,?Soilwatch, and?Ekovilla Oy?for their vital contributions to the CDR ecosystem. ?? Last week at COP29, new standards for methodologies and removals in the Article 6.4 Mechanism were officially approved by the conference of the parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA), setting the foundation to establish a global carbon market. ? ?? A big congratulations to Planetary for delivering the world's first Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) credits. ?? A total of 138 net tonnes of OAE credits, generated from Planetary’s project in Halifax Harbour, has been delivered to Frontier, with allocations to Shopify (96 tonnes) and Stripe (42 tonnes) under a 2023 prepurchase agreement. Also a big shoutout to Shopify, Stripe, Dalhousie University, and Nova Scotia Power, for their support in showcasing that OAE is a scalable, effective, and safe approach to addressing climate change.
?? A Major Milestone in Ocean-Based Carbon Removal ?? We’re proud to announce that Planetary Technologies has delivered the world’s first net Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) carbon removals—138 tonnes of CO2 safely removed from the atmosphere! This achievement is a testament to what’s possible when innovation, science, and collaboration come together. ?? Big First Deals Alert!??? ?? Microsoft and RBC have signed a 10-year agreement to purchase 10,000 tonnes of CDR from Canadian project developer Deep Sky. ?? As part of the agreement, Deep Sky will?deliver an initial 10,000 tonnes with options to purchase an additional 1 million tonnes from Deep Sky's pipeline of commercial projects. ?? The tonnes will be delivered from Deep Sky Labs, the world's first CDR innovation and commercialization center. ?? This is first durable CDR deal for both Deep Sky and Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). ?? At 43rd, RBC is the newest entrant to the CDR.fyi Purchaser Leaderboard. ? Deep Sky, another new entrant to the CDR.fyi Supplier Leaderboard, stands at 43rd. ??
