“People aren’t knowledgeable about the resources available and that they have the power to get things shaking and moving, you’ve got to bring people together in order to get something started.” - Ethel Johnson, program manager at West Central Alabama Community Health Improvement League (WCACHIL). In the rural communities of west central Alabama, WCACHIL, with support from the CDC Foundation, supported increased water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) access to help alleviate access issues to not only clean water but complications that arise from poor sewage system infrastructure. A collaborative of regional partners that included Northeast Kingdom Organizing, Northern Counties Health Care, Inc., Northeast Kingdom Human Services (NKHS), Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, MPHI, Northeast Kingdom Human Services, NEKCA - Northeast Kingdom Community Action, Federated Church of Orleans, The Center for an Agricultural Economy, Neighbors in Action, Hardwick Area Neighbor to Neighbor, NEK Prosper - Caledonia-Southern Essex Accountable Health Community, Greensboro United Church of Christ, H.O.P.E, Powered Magazine, Vermont Department of Health and the VT Agency of Human Services worked together to deploy over 300 local volunteers, provide direct relief assistance, raise funds for much-needed services and increase opportunities for disaster survivors to be directly involved in all aspects of the recovery efforts. We are proud to support this work by helping to strengthen the relationships between organizations and public health to address local needs, and we salute these #localchangemakers in Vermont as they continue to demonstrate the healing power of partnerships. #RuralHealthDay

Today, for #RuralHealthDay, I’m re-sharing a recent story that recognizes the importance of providing healthcare to those with limited access through Federally Qualified Health Centers. Early in my career, I moved to Tennessee with my husband and newborn son to join the staff of Morgan County Medical Center and began my career as a family physician. My experience through those years also taught me lessons about the power of partnerships when resources are limited and needs are great. Read more about the impact these centers have had on the people of Morgan County over the years and the careers they have inspired, here: https://cdcf.link/490YTbn
