? On Friday, May 3, Asian Health Services was selected as the Nonprofit Partner for the Oakland A's AAPI Heritage Night Game against the Miami Marlins! CEO Julia Liou took center stage, delivering the ceremonial first pitch. For #AAPIHeritageMonth and #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, KTVU2 News invited Asian Health Services President Thu Quach, Kaiser Permanente Regional Director Tera Eng, and recent Mental Health Academy graduate Mon Wong to share about joint efforts to increase the number of Asian Americans in the mental health workforce. Asian Health Services received a $500,000 grant from Kaiser Permanente for a 26-month pilot project establishing a mental health training academy to train graduate students who are currently working toward their Master of Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy degrees. The program provides trainees with culturally and linguistically appropriate training including clinical experience with Asian American clients. Five trainees recently graduated from the pilot program. Currently, AHS is the largest mental health provider for the Asian American population in Alameda County, providing much-needed culturally and linguistically competent mental health care. Since the pandemic, it has seen a 2.5-fold increase in mental health visits. During the KTVU interview, recent program graduate Mon Wong shared about her experience getting into the field as an immigrant mother with the goal of helping other immigrants. This position would teach classes in the Addiction and Recovery Counseling Certificate Program, the Community Mental Health Certificate Program and general education classes, depending on qualifications. The ideal candidate will share the college’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population and be knowledgeable about culturally responsive pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging diverse communities who are historically underrepresented and underserved in traditional classrooms.
