The Fatima Family Center, a Catholic Charities Organization, is celebrating its 52nd anniversary this year. Their mission is to improve the quality of life for those in the Hough neighborhood through health and wellness activities, educational opportunities, and community outreach. LaJean Ray, director of the Fatima Family Center, says she tries to share the history of the center and the neighborhood with all who benefit from its programming. LaJean provides a Black History Showcase every February for the seniors and community members to celebrate Black History Month, inspire learning, and honor their heritage.
LaJean says, "As a proud resident, I am well aware of the history and culture. We try intentionally to educate those about our history and Black history. In 2002, we took 10 young men to Ghana and Senegal. Nine of those men are now college graduates. We are creating and empowering great community leaders here. The opportunity and exposure to these resources and history make all the difference in the world."
The Fatima Family Center works closely with libraries and universities in the area to provide tutoring, mentorship, and resources to over 30 children in their afterschool programs. LaJean shares that bringing students the resources they need for free is one of the center's focus areas.
In addition to children's and senior programming, the Fatima Family Center offers summer camps, hosts live parking lot concerts in the summer, and is launching a new program called "Pool, Poker, and Pals" for men in the community.
