Delegates gathered in Baku, Azerbaijan, for this year’s UN Climate Talks amid one of the hottest years on record, as global temperatures surpassed the critical 1.5°C warming threshold. #COP29 saw slow and incremental progress over its two-week duration, hindered by socioeconomic and political challenges. The Conference, billed as the Finance COP, extended into the weekend, with Parties under pressure to reach an agreement on the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG)—a new financial target designed to support developing countries in their climate efforts. Developing nations, seeking to bridge the vast climate finance gap, called for a deal in the trillions, not billions. Ultimately, the NCQG, which was announced Sunday, faced criticism for its lack of ambition and clarity. While the target was tripled from $100 billion to $300 billion annually, it still falls well short of addressing the $1.3 trillion funding gap. Developing nations raised concerns about insufficient funding commitments, ongoing debt crises and the continued reliance on loans rather than grants. ?? As attention turns to next year’s crucial climate talks in Brazil, we highlight the key outcomes of #COP29 in relation to #carbonmarkets, #climatefinance and #methanemitigation. ?? As #COP29 draws to a close today, and negotiators work towards finalizing discussions in Baku, #CCAP Climate Finance Director Sebastian Lema shares his reflections on the UN Climate Talks before heading back to Colombia! ?? Transparency is essential ?? to unlocking the additional funds needed to help countries achieve their Sustainable Development Goals and address the worst impacts of climate change. Sebastian emphasizes: “Securing additional funds requires a climate finance tracking system or a transparency framework within recipient countries. A crucial starting point for this is implementing the Guide we launched earlier this week.” ?? The Climate Finance Transparency Guide, developed with the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT), is available for download here: https://lnkd.in/eahiKmqA ?? ?? Transparency is the foundation of the Paris Agreement, and enhancing the transparency of both public and private finance is essential for achieving global climate goals. ???? As negotiations continue late into the night at the Finance COP, Parties are working toward finalizing the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance, which requires trillions of dollars in funding for climate projects. In the midst of these critical discussions in Baku, we’re excited to announce the launch of the Climate Finance Transparency Guide—a product of two years of collaboration with the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT)! ?? ?????? Download the Guide here ? https://lnkd.in/eahiKmqA At our #COP29 launch event, we discussed how data can be leveraged to attract and manage funding for climate action. Representatives from C?te d'Ivoire, Senegal, Belize and Morocco shared their experiences in creating transparency frameworks to mobilize, track and allocate climate finance for maximum impact. As we approach December’s critical deadline to submit Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs) to the #UNFCCC, Parties are working to strengthen their reporting capacities to improve transparency. This Guide is one of the most comprehensive resources to help countries kickstart their reporting efforts to the #UNFCCC, with a flexible, tailored approach for developing countries facing resource and capacity-building challenges. The Guide offers step-by-step methodological support for policymakers, helping them to create and implement national climate finance transparency frameworks. It focuses on collecting data on financial needs and flows while ensuring alignment with the Paris Agreement’s enhanced transparency framework. This evolving process will empower countries to strengthen future submissions, addressing the unique needs and characteristics of SIDS and LDCs. A heartfelt thank you to all the authors and collaborators who made this Guide possible, including Gauss International Consulting and the greenwerk., for their continued support. During the #COP29 Global Methane Pledge Ministerial, 8 Latin American countries made major announcements to include methane emissions reductions from the waste sector in their new Nationally Determined Contributions! ?? ?Brazil ?Colombia ?Costa Rica ?Guatemala ?México ?Panamá ?Perú ?Chile ?? We commend these countries for taking bold action to address methane emissions from the #waste sector, which is responsible for approximately 20% of global methane emissions, making it the third-largest contributor after agriculture and oil & gas. In Latin America, organic waste represents nearly 50% of the total waste stream and can generate significant methane when disposed of in landfills. It’s time to move from pledges to tangible actions. We need strong regulations, accessible financing and the widespread deployment of innovative technologies. At CCAP, we're proud to be supporting over 20 countries around the globe to accelerate the implementation of policies and projects that create enabling conditions for sustainable organic waste treatment technologies. ?? In addition, during the Ministerial, governments and philanthropic organizations announced nearly $500 million in new grant funding for methane abatement, bringing the total funding mobilized under the Pledge to over $2 billion. With 159 countries and the European Commission now participating in the GMP, the momentum continues to build! ?? With support from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the #RecycleOrganics pilot home composting program has made significant strides in #Belize over the past few months, helping communities across the country manage organic waste more efficiently. With the crucial support from the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA), to date, 200 compost bins and equipment have been distributed to families in various communities, where participants, together with program monitors, have been learning about the importance of reducing organic waste and the many co-benefits of home composting. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants embracing their new composting systems and actively practicing waste separation. Key outcomes so far include: ?? Fostering a culture of composting and waste separation at the source ?? Beginning the production of nutrient-rich soil from their own organic waste ?? Teaching children, neighbors and extended family members about the benefits of composting ?? Improving home gardening efforts and maintaining cleaner yards by composting organic waste beyond food scraps Check out this recent story to learn more about our Program in the country!?? https://lnkd.in/dwGwap59
