Last week, we accelerated action to strengthen stakeholder capacity for organic waste management public policy planning during a trip to Porto Alegre, Brazil! ?? As part of our ongoing "Accelerating the Implementation of Projects and Creating Enabling Conditions to Reduce Emissions" project, funded by the Climate & Clean Air Coalition, we’re collaborating with the State Secretariat for Environment and Infrastructure of Rio Grande do Sul (SEMA/RS - Secretaria do Meio Ambiente e Infraestrutura - Governo do RS) We actively participated in the Rio Grande do Sul Climate Change Forum, engaging with the State Secretariat on challenges and opportunities for #methane emissions mitigation in the solid waste sector. ?? ?? Check out the recording here: https://lnkd.in/dEGfBiQC During the Forum, we organized and facilitated a workshop focused on identifying barriers and solutions for composting, bioenergy and food recovery projects in the state, bringing together 40 participants from a diverse range of sectors. ?? Key Visits during our trip ??: ?? ?We toured a biogas-to-biomethane production system at the largest sanitary landfill in Rio Grande do Sul, processing 5,000 tons of municipal solid waste per day. We also checked out an innovative, compact solution developed by Igapó, processing organic waste from large commercial generators. ?? Cooperativa Ecocitrus' composting facility, operated by a citrus growers’ cooperative, with a capacity to process up to 20,000 tons per day, producing high-quality, traceable #compost. ?? ?Met with the president of the State’s Central Supply and Distribution Center for Fruits and Vegetables (CEASA) to discuss expanding operations of the regional #foodbank. See how RO is making a real impact on cutting #methane emissions in the Global South and beyond! ? https://bit.ly/RO2P25CE #Sustainability #ClimateAction #WasteManagement #OrganicWaste #Biogas #FoodRecovery #EmissionsReduction #CutMethane

?? Minimum Social Safeguards (MSS) in sustainable finance taxonomies ensure that economic activities labeled as "sustainable" or "green" meet essential rules for upholding social objectives. But what are these key objectives? ?? ? Human rights ? Labor & working conditions ? Prevention of corruption & bribery ? Fair competition ? Gender equality While there’s been growing momentum globally, many taxonomies still lack detail on applying these safeguards, which affects compliance rates. For example, a recent report on Mexico’s sustainable taxonomy found that 61.5% of financial operations studied didn’t meet MSS compliance by early 2025. In our latest blog, researchers Ana Him (CCAP) and Ana Citlalic González-Martínez (Planisphera Sustentabilidad A.C.) explore Latin America's progress in MSS compliance and the trends shaping the region’s social objectives reflected in countries’ taxonomies. ???? One standout: Chile’s new taxonomy is setting the bar for including specific safeguards and criteria to protect social pillars in environmentally sustainable activities. ?? This new framework not only aligns with international guidelines but encourages taxonomies worldwide to strengthen safeguards, ensuring that "green" investments truly meet both social and environmental standards. ?? ?? As the Climate & Clean Air Coalition Conference 2025 comes to a close in Brasilia, CCAP Executive Director Allison Bender Corbett reflects on the Recycle Organics Program’s comprehensive approach to tackling #methane emissions. By promoting policies that foster systemic change, the program aims to create the right conditions for impactful, national-level progress. “We’re collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders—municipalities, the hospitality sector, large generators like hotels and restaurants, and launching educational initiatives to inspire the next generation. It’s all about understanding the crucial role of source separation and the long-term benefits of reducing methane emissions for cleaner air and a healthier environment.” ?? After engaging in insightful discussions and hearing from a diverse array of voices throughout the 3-day conference, we leave Brazil feeling energized and motivated by the global drive to integrate ambitious strategies for reducing super pollutants into updated national climate plans (NDCs 3.0). ?? Moving from momentum to action is key as we approach #COP30 back in Brazil later this year. Tackling super pollutants alongside deep decarbonization must remain a top priority in our current decade. Last Friday, CCAP Research Analyst Maria Paula Viscardo Sesma took part in one of Argentina’s largest agricultural events—the 2025 Expoagro Argentina, held in San Nicolás. During the event, she presented our exciting new Recycle Organics initiative funded by the Climate & Clean Air Coalition. The project, titled "Developing Organic Waste Recovery Policies to Reduce Methane and CO2 Emissions," aims to support the Argentine government in creating policies for improving the management of organic waste treatment byproducts, including #compost, #digestate and #biogas. By working with a diverse group of stakeholders—from farmers to local and national government officials—the RO team, led by #CCAP and ImplementaSur, will demonstrate how integrating composting and anaerobic digestion policies can help reduce #methane and carbon emissions in waste management practices. EXPOAGRO is a pivotal event for Argentina's agricultural and livestock industries, bringing together thousands of enterprises, producers, institutions and government leaders. Over 220,000 visitors attended, interacting with nearly 700 exhibitors who showcased the latest in agricultural machinery and innovations. While the sector is crucial for the country’s economic growth, it also offers substantial potential for reducing #greenhousegas emissions, especially short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) like #methane. In Argentina, organic waste makes up 44.19% of the total solid waste sent to landfills, yet recovery rates remain below 5%. As a global leader in agricultural exports, including meat, fruits, vegetables and fish, Argentina’s trading partners are increasingly imposing environmental standards. The significant volume and quality of organic waste produced present an enormous opportunity for environmental and economic gains through effective recovery practices. During the event, which was also attended by President Javier Millei, María Paula engaged with a variety of stakeholders, including representatives from NGOs and government bodies like #INTA, PNUD Argentina and the National Subsecretary of Environment. She also participated in a panel discussion on "International Perspectives for the Agricultural and Livestock Sector of the Future," organized by the Rural Women’s Network, featuring speakers from the European Union in Argentina, UNDP and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). Stay tuned for more updates on our new #MethaneMitigation project in Argentina!

On this International Women’s Day, we’re reaffirming that gender equality is a fundamental human right, essential for building a peaceful, productive society, enabling self-actualization and driving sustainable development. Empowering women not only enhances individual lives but also fuels productivity and economic growth. In fact, removing barriers to employment for girls and women could boost labor productivity by 25% in some countries. Our current Recycle Organics project in #Togo (supported by the Climate & Clean Air Coalition and implemented by #CCAP and ImplementaSur) has a strong focus on gender equality. Research shows there are significant opportunities to create green jobs for women in Togo, while also improving their livelihoods and working conditions. While women make up a significant portion of the workforce in the #waste sector, they continue to be one of the most marginalized groups, often working in informal capacities and in more hazardous roles. Formal participation in waste management can empower women economically, but they often face challenges such as childcare responsibilities, lower wages, and limited access to credit. Incorporating a gender perspective into the waste sector helps us better understand these disparities between men and women, enabling us to address them through the design, scope, and implementation of sustainable projects. So, how can we improve gender equality? ?? Providing equal access to: ?? Quality education ?? Health and Wellness ?? Economic resources ?? Participation in political life ?? Employment ?? Leadership and decision-making positions ?? Ending gender-based violence We all have a role to play in raising awareness of these inequalities and advocating for stronger policies that promote gender equality across every sector. Learn more about our Togo Initiative. The forthcoming reports will be available next month ? https://lnkd.in/g7qDuS9G #IWD2025 #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2024 #Equality #ClimateJustice
