Kolton is spotlighting our mission: to empower and give hope to individuals and families affected by facial differences.? Children's Craniofacial Association is a national, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, but serving the entire US and beyond. Nationally and internationally, CCA addresses the medical, financial, psychosocial, emotional, and educational concerns relating to craniofacial conditions. CCA's mission is to empower and give hope to individuals and families affected by facial differences. CCA envisions a world where all people are accepted for who they are, not how they look. At CCA, we are making the world a kinder place for all people. We fund three main programs: 1. Financial Assistance for children and families traveling to receive quality medical care. CCA can help with ancillary expenses not covered by insurance, such as food, travel, and lodging when traveling for surgery or mdical procedures. 2. We host regional gatherings for families to meet each other and develop friendships, including our Annual Family Retreat and Educational Symposium, where families gather to hear medical and mental health professionals present and conduct workshops on emerging research, self-esteem issues, self-care, parenting, and more. 3. Our Speakers' Bureau and educational curriculum are available to teachers and educators. Buy booking a speaker or engaging with our materials, we hope audiences will come away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the human experience and learn that we are truly more alike than different. Our goals with this program are to decrease bullying, cultivate conversations, and inspire acceptance that combats the stigma of living with a facial difference. A Note of Thanks from our Executive Director, Erica Klauber: My almost-3 year old daughter is in her compliment era. It has to be one of the greatest eras of my life. In the line at airport security, she’ll scream to the woman ahead of us, “I like your pink hair!” At a busy restaurant on Friday night, she will tell our server, “Oooh, I like your nails, so pretty!” and ask to see them. To an older woman, shuffling slowly through the grocery store, she’ll call out from the cart, “I love your flower jacket!” In every one of those instances, the person on the receiving end of that compliment instantly disarmed; burst out in audible laughter, and said, “Why thank you!” and straighted her shoulders as she walked by. The simple power of these compliments has impacted me deeply. I had forgotten how wonderfully nice it feels for someone to see you and appreciate how you show up in this world. My daughter sees people with fresh eyes and the thrill of novelty; what a wonderful way to see this world without ingrained and even unconscious biases. Through her, I witness how something as simple as a sincere compliment can improve your day. And for those moments where she shows me hope in human connection, I am so grateful. The gratitude I feel for this education that my daughter is giving me is what I want to share with you this Thanksgiving Day. I deeply value our connection to one another through this amazing, resilient community. I am honored that we have both the burden and the privilege of changing the world through education about facial differences. I cherish the times we gather – in person and virtually – throughout the year to ease one another’s troubles and celebrate our bonds, even though those bonds may have been formed due to difficult circumstances. So this Thanksgiving, I recommend you try out some vocal complimenting to strangers. The more we can come together on the things we share, the better this world is going to be. I am so glad you’re here. Thank you for being a part of Children’s Craniofacial Association. And, you know, I really like your cool socks.
