In last Thursday’s Buccaneer Success Workshop at CBU, Andrew J. Hampton, Ph.D., challenged students with a powerful question: Do you want a degree or an education? — a reminder that while AI might help you finish an essay at 8 a.m. when you're cold and tired, real learning comes from the work we put in ourselves. ?? #cbu #ArtificialIntelligence #ResponsibleAI #EdTech #AIAndEthics #HigherEducation #StudentSuccess
“It’s an 8am class. I’m cold, I’m tired and I have to write an essay. Or I could let a robot do it.” - Dr. Andrew Hampton providing a scenario of why students are tempted to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGTP. In Thursday’s Buccaneer Success Workshop: “Responsible Use of AI,” at Christian Brothers University, CBU professor Andrew J. Hampton, Ph.D. offered students a guiding question when considering how to use AI in coursework - do they want a degree or do they want an education? In other words, extensive use of AI can potentially get you through college to earn a degree, but in the process… will you have learned anything? Dr. Hampton was working in and studying AI long before ChatGTP launched to the public in 2022. His book, “The Frontlines of Artificial Intelligence Ethics Human-Centric Perspectives on Technology’s Advance” was published that same year. In Thursday's presentation, Dr. Hampton shared data from a meta-analysis that looked at numerous studies about students and AI use. One finding - workload and time pressure are the biggest contributers to students using AI for assignments. In a brief anonymous survey given by Dr. Hampton in the workshop, students indicated that clearer guidelines would influence how they use AI. He advised students who want to use AI ethically in the classroom to work with their professors about how they are using it in an assignment. Ultimately, Dr. Hampton advised that with this quickly evolving technology, students and faculty must collaborate to develop powerful and responsible ways to use AI for learning.
