This week, let's (re)discover the Pawtucket tunnel, in the State of??Rhode Island (USA). ? Since 2022, Bouygues Travaux Publics teams have been working as part of the CB3A consortium on the construction of a 3.5-km tunnel with an internal diameter of 9 metres. Its purpose: to collect and store the region’s stormwater, waste water and industrial water before sending it to the treatment plant.? ? In order to carry out this project, a TBM named Chloé was specially designed to cope with the varied geology of the route. ? Why such a project? The Providence region has long been plagued by water pollution problems. In 2001, the Narragansett Bay Commission launched a vast programme aimed at improving water quality. ? The Pawtucket Tunnel, the final phase of this project, will enable 98% of sewer overflow water to be treated. It will have the capacity to collect and store the equivalent of 92 Olympic-sized swimming pools. ? As a young engineer, I had the opportunity to work with Bouygues on the Channel Tunnel jobsite - a once-in-a-lifetime project connecting centers of Paris and London in slightly more than two hours, through a 32-mile undersea tunnel. ?After three decades of operation, it is impossible to imagine life without the Channel Tunnel. I felt the same fulfillment when I embarked in the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link adventure, a game changer infrastructure project for South African commuters between Johannesburg and Pretoria, where Bouygues Travaux Publics led the design, financing and construction of a 50-mile green field integrated rail transport system. Should you have the opportunity to visit the Rainbow Nation, you will land in OR Tambo airport and be able to enjoy a comfortable 15 mn rail shuttle ride to go to Sandton, the business and tourist district of greater Johannesburg. This project has also been instrumental in regenerating urban development, improving not only mobility but also everyday life in the city. To-day, I am animated by the same sense of pride when CBNA works at building the Potomac River Tunnel for DC Water contributing to make the Potomac River cleaner, preserving the quality and the natural beauty of the “Nation’s River”. We celebrated Construction Safety Week across all CBNA locations! From our South Florida projects in Fort Lauderdale and Miami to the Pawtucket Tunnel Project in Rhode Island and the Potomac River Tunnel Project in Washington, DC, our project sites kicked off the week with vibrant presentations that seamlessly integrated the themes and materials from Bouygues Construction Safety Week. At our corporate offices in Miami, led by JEAN BAPTISTE BAUDIN DE LA VALETTE, Jean Baptiste and Dan Tomczak, we continued the momentum on Monday, May 13. Our entire staff engaged in crucial discussions on safety culture, focusing on the New 6 Major Risks and the 10 Life Saving Rules—our ultimate line of defense. Moreover, our head office team participated in innovative Neuroscience sessions to deepen our understanding of Human Error and its impact on safety. [CONTRACT AWARD] Enbridge Great Lakes Tunnel Project CBNA (Civil & Building North America Inc.), the American subsidiary of Bouygues Travaux Publics, in partnership with Barnard Construction have been awarded the Enbridge Energy contract to support the construction of a four-mile tunnel beneath the Straits of Mackinac. The Mackinac Straits Partners JV will plan to build a tunnel deep under the Straits to house Line 5. It will be bored through varied ground conditions, as much as 100 feet below the lakebed. Congratulations to the team for this new project, and we're excited to collaborate with Enbridge and all stakeholders to bring this momentous project to life, setting new standards for safety and efficiency in our industry.
