Good afternoon. Clinical studies have demonstrated promising health benefits for hemp-based cannabinoids, including pain relief, reduced stress and improved sleep quality. Amid marketing restrictions, regulatory challenges and business pressures, the cannabinoid sector is gaining scientific credibility. I interviewed Sibyl Swift, Ph.D. at cbdMD, Alleh Lindquist at FloraWorks and Brenden Dougherty at MDbio - The Doctors Brand? to discuss clinical results that were publicized over the summer. Article also includes commentary from Radicle Science co-founders Dr. Jeff Chen MD/MBA and Pelin Wood Thorogood.

Consumers are increasingly interested in nutraceutical options for their health and wellness needs. They are looking to dietary supplements for non-pharmaceutical options to address areas including, mood, recovery, sleep, focus, memory, and immune support. The increased interest has led to a boom in the functional mushroom market which was estimated to be reach $32 billion in 2024 and is expected to hit almost $49 billion by 2029, which includes Lion’s mane mushroom, Chaga mushroom, Shiitake mushrooms, Reishi mushrooms, Cordyceps mushroom, Turkey tail mushrooms and Maitake mushrooms. A recent review explored the areas in which one functional mushroom, maitake, presents health benefits for consumers. ?The Maitake mushroom (Grifola frondosa) have been utilized for its adaptogenic and immune supporting properties for centuries. East Asian traditional medicine incorporates both the fruiting bodies and the mycelium into its practice for the numerous benefits it provides. Maitake mushrooms contain a multitude of bioactive substances including polysaccharides, beta-glucans, flavonoids, phenolic acids, ergosterol, dextrin, terpenoids, sterols, fatty acids, and oligofructose. Maitake’s rich polyphenol content has been associated with antioxidant activities, while their fatty acid and amino acid content present potential benefits for cosmetic products. It’s content of beta-glucans and other proteins have been linked to immune supporting potential. These constituents have also been linked to promotion of mediators of immune responses. More research is needed to fully appreciate the benefits this incredible mushroom. In recognition of Maitake’s benefits, our sister brand ATRx Labs, recently launched a line of platinum mushroom capsules, which includes the Everyday Immune: Wellness and Support capsules. ATRx Labs’ immune capsules include a blend of mushrooms to support immune function and overall wellness including Cordyceps, Reishi, Turkey Tail, Chaga, and Maitake. We will continue to share data on the benefits of functional mushrooms as it becomes available. #functionalnutrition #functionalmushrooms #innovation #researchanddevelopment https://lnkd.in/eSnt39xV

Nutrition Business Journal (NBJ) surveyed U.S. consumers who self-reported experiencing stress and other mood-related issues. The results indicated 55% of survey participants believe dietary supplements would have an impact on the mood-related issues. NBJ sales data for “Mood and Mental Health Supplements” demonstrated a significant increase in this category’s sales during the pandemic which continued to steadily grow post-pandemic, with predictions for total sales reaching an estimated $1.4 billion. The surge in interest for dietary supplements for mood-related issues has led to an increase in research for botanical ingredients addressing this area, including derivatives from Cannabis sativa L. Previously, most literature on efficacy pertaining to Cannabis sativa L. and benefits on mood issues was focused on cannabidiol (CBD) or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Despite the lack of data, consumers have reported using other minor phytocannabinoids, including cannabigerol (CBG), for mood-related conditions with success. CBG, often referred to as “the mother of all cannabinoids” because its acid form, cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), is the precursor for many other cannabinoids (including CBD and THC). A recent study in Nature Scientific Reports explored the acute effects of cannabigerol (CBG) for anxiety, stress, and mood. The study was a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover field trial with a washout period between each testing session where participants consumed 20 mg of hemp-derived CBG or placebo tinctures one time before completing clinically verified assessments for depression, anxiety and stress. The data indicates a one-time consumption of 20 mg CBG resulted in significant reductions in subjects’ feelings of anxiety. In recognition of the benefits associated with consuming CBG, we have developed several products which incorporate it in the formula. We provide our customers with innovative products for their unique needs. We will continue to share information about CBG and other cannabinoids as it becomes available. #cannabinoids #CBG #botanicals #research #innovation #mentalhealth https://lnkd.in/gf9HbQDD

Anxiety disorders are ranked as the world’s most common mental disorders, affecting 4% of the global population or over 301 million people according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Anxiety manifests across several disorders including obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The symptoms often contribute to a reduced quality of life, increased unemployment rate, and a number of physical ailments. Treatment options range from psychological interventions to antidepressant medications. The medications typically present undesirable side effects and often leave persistent symptoms in a number of patients. Cannabidiol (CBD) has been studied in clinical trials for several indications, including anxiety disorders. A recent meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of CBD for anxiety disorders in open label and double-blind randomized clinical trials in published literature. The studies administered oral doses of CBD ranging from 25 mg up to 800 mg daily for durations of 110 minutes to 12 weeks to explore acute and chronic effects. Studies that provided participants with continuous doses of CBD demonstrated a significant improvement in anxiety. The overall conclusion of the meta-analysis was CBD does provide anxiolytic effects when consumed continuously (rather than a single acute dose) and the dose at which these effects occurred was 300 – 400 mg/day. Notably, CBD treatment demonstrated fewer side effects when compared to medical treatment for anxiety. cbdMD recently announced the results from our clinical trial in humans. We explored the effects of 100 mg CBD/day for a 90-day period in human subjects. Results included lower stress scores in female participants and a trend for lower tension/anxiety scores in both male and female participants. Our study provided lower doses of CBD than the study discussed today, which lends itself to the supplement-level endpoints we reported. Together, these studies add to the existing literature supporting the benefits of CBD for anxiety and other issues related to mental health. #CBDWellness #CBDBenefits #Research #Cannabinoids #Cannabidiol https://lnkd.in/eEUG6ts4

The NCAA Division I council voted last week to remove use of cannabis products from the banned drug class for championships and postseason participation in football will be effective immediately. This follows several professional leagues making the decision to remove bans on cannabinoid products. MLB made the decision to remove cannabis from the banned substance list and players are no longer tested. The NBA no longer tests athletes for cannabis or cannabinoid products. The NHL does test for cannabis, however, they do not punish players if they test positive. The UFC has also removed cannabis and cannabinoid products from its list of prohibited substances for athletes. The significant amount of data supporting the benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabinoids from cannabis for recovery and overall mental wellness has contributed to the change in position by the NCAA and most professional sports leagues. “The NCAA drug testing program is intended to focus on integrity of competition, and cannabis products do not provide a competitive advantage,” NCAA Council Chairman, Josh Whitman said in a statement released by the NCAA following the decision.? He went on to say, “The Council's focus is on policies centered on student-athlete health and well-being rather than punishment for cannabis use." At cbdMD, we understand the role cannabinoids, like CBD, play in recovery for athletes. cbdMD was the first CBD brand to offer three products with NSF’s Certified for Sport Certification. Our NSF Sport category offers a full suite of solutions for our customers including athletes, first responders, doctors, nurses, educators, tradespeople and anyone subject to a workplace drug test so they can focus on their mental health and recovery without fear of failing a drug test. For those without a concern about workplace or sports drug testing, cbdMD offers a line of full spectrum products ranging from microdose through high potency depending on the specific need. We’ve taken strides through our commitment to quality and science to offer products our customers can trust that are backed by rigorous studies. The results from our human clinical trial were published this week. They demonstrated our broad spectrum CBD, which is the core formula our NSF for Sports products were formulated with, has efficacy for pain. The study also indicated there may be mental health benefits as well: there was a trend for reduced “anger-hostility” for male subjects and a trend for lower “stress-anxiety” for female subjects following the consumption of 100 mg broad spectrum CBD. We will continue to share updates on cannabis or cannabinoid policy changes for sports leagues or data on the benefits of cannabinoids as it becomes available. #Recovery #Sportsnutrition #CBDbenefits #Research https://lnkd.in/gqpuKs3J

Cordyceps militaris is an established ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) due to its wealth of benefits. Cordyceps contains a wealth of beneficial constituents including polysaccharides, nucleotides, amino acids, cordycepic acid, ergosterol, and beta-sitosterol, which all contribute to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neuroprotective, antiaging, and immune-supporting properties. Several human studies have been published that demonstrate cordyceps have immune-promoting and supporting effects, however, they lacked data on gender-specific effects. A recent study in Nature Scientific Reports explored the effects of cordyceps delivered in a beverage in a randomized controlled clinical trial on immune response in healthy male and female subjects. The data indicate cordyceps do activate immune-modulating cascades at different time points in male and female participants. Males demonstrated activation of natural killer cells after four weeks and females exhibited significant activation after eight weeks of supplementation with the cordyceps beverage. Males also exhibited an increase in monocyte levels after four and eight weeks of consuming the cordyceps beverage, however the increase was within normal ranges. Male subjects showed an increase in IL-1b at four weeks and female subjects had higher IL-6 levels after eight weeks. Overall, this study supports the immune-modulating benefits of cordyceps in male and female subjects. cbdMD’s sister brand, ATRx Labs, launched the Ultimate Mushroom gummies in recognition of the benefits of functional mushrooms, like cordyceps, lion’s mane, and reishi for a number of areas, including the immune benefits described in the article today. We anticipate future additions to the functional mushroom line in ATRx Labs in recognition of the growing body of literature supporting their benefits. We will continue to share data on the benefits of functional mushrooms and other botanical ingredients as it becomes available. https://lnkd.in/eGfeEjjf #functionalnutrition #functionalmushrooms #innovation #researchanddevelopment
