We’re pleased to announce that our project Santuario De La Salle in the Philippines has been selected as an Architizer A+Award Finalist in the Religious Buildings and Memorials category. The design is a new, inclusive religious space nestled within a larger campus masterplan we created for De La Salle University in Bi?an City. A departure from the traditional form and spatial order of a church, CAZA conceived Santuario de La Salle as a union of several volumes to create a form that is refreshingly new and unexpected. An aggregation of different shapes offers a spatial experience that is more than the sum of its parts, much like individuals coming together to create a community bound by faith and common mission. The 100 Walls Church adeptly explores contemporary design's role in bolstering the church's influence in the Philippines, aiming to foster community ties and nurture individual spiritual journeys. With a subtle yet impactful approach, the church shapes spaces to harmonize collective bonds and facilitate personal spiritual growth. Within its walls, rooms transcend conventional boundaries, existing independently yet interwoven, embracing architectural strangeness and inviting individuals to engage with deliberate ambiguity, deriving personal and unique meanings from their experiences. In collaboration with the largest prefabrication company in the northern United States, CAZA has developed a customizable design scheme for ADUs that leverages existing production capabilities, supply chains, and customer service infrastructure. This streamlined process enables customers to order a customized home online, which can be delivered and installed on-site within weeks. Notably, this approach minimizes the environmental impact of the units, transforming the traditionally carbon-intensive ADU type into a sustainable housing solution. The prototype, the first of its kind, has received an Energy Star rating, thanks partly to features like rooftop solar panels for energy generation, strategically located windows for cross-ventilation, and exterior walls designed to support plantings. The Metropolitan Museum of Manila is the first contemporary art museum in the Philippines. CAZA's design for the museum intricately pays tribute to the country's diverse landscapes. The palm-planted entrance, adorned with moveable wooden decks and tables, reflects the geographic form of the Philippine islands while the color palette, inspired by the country's beaches, transitions from earth-colored pavers to areas of pebbles, creating a casual rhythm in the plaza. Inside, the lobby evokes the lushness of the forest with an arcade of green steel tubes enveloping the grand reception area, reminiscent of a forest canopy. The Sky Room on the second floor offers a light and ethereal space for solitary contemplation, with blue hues and soft materials dominating the design, complemented by sculpted terrazzo floors and seating islands for reflection. CAZA's masterplan for Haishu integrates a strong sense of local identity and community life around its waterfront. Attractions like an Ecology Educational Center, Sports Club, and Ecological Park draw visitors, complemented by amenities such as a canal-side mall, hotel, and convention center. Data-driven development informs the urban grid, optimizing zoning and density strategies based on real estate transactions and improving connectivity through road and subway studies. We presented an engaging exhibit at the 2016 Venice Biennale, exploring the intersection of art and architecture. Drawing from our book, CAZA: 2010-2016, we questioned if people could navigate the complexities of architectural drawing. Visitors interacted with a screen capturing their facial movements, projecting animated drawings instead of mirror images. Each gesture transformed the drawing in ways they didn't recognize but paradoxically controlled. This immersive experience reflects the architect's daily practice of creating personal geographies through drawing exercises.
