The Cavender Auto Group has been selling and servicing automobiles and trucks in San Antonio and South Texas for over 80 years. James M. Cavender Jr. started Cavender Oldsmobile in 1939. Over the next 30 years, Cavender Oldsmobile would become one of the top Olds dealerships in the country based on sales and customer satisfaction. With the help of his twin sons, Jimmy and Billy, James Cavender would acquire a Cadillac dealership in 1979. By the mid 1980’s the third generation of Cavender boys would enter the automobile business. Today the Cavender name is associated with 8 separate dealership facilities selling Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Land Rover, Ford and Nissan brands. The Slogan “Where the name Cavender is on the door, there is a Cavender on the floor.” certainly applies today. Each Cavender acts as not only the dealer, but general manager, and is always available to meet with customers and employees. When you buy from a Cavender dealership you are treated like family.

The secrets behind Cavender Auto Group’s 300% sales volume increase: Recently, I spoke to Rob Cavender (COO) and Eric Barbosa (VP of Variable Operations) from Cavender Auto Group who discussed cracking the dealership code by using data-driven decision-making, structured leadership development, and a relentless focus on customer experience. Top Lessons Learned from Rob and Eric: 1. Scaling requires leadership development, not just acquisitions. – Cavender moved from an owner-led structure to developing GMs for every store. – Their “Road to GM” program includes three phases: mastering variable operations, understanding personnel expenses, and full-store management. – From there—candidates attend NCM’s GM school and train internally for two years before stepping into the role. 2. KPIs and analytics drive everything—from hiring to marketing. – Sales KPIs: Total opportunities, close rate, appointment show rate. – Service KPIs: RO count per advisor, customer response time, effective labor rate. – Employee KPIs: Turnover rate and cost per hire ($20K+ per employee). 3. Customer experience is being rebuilt from the ground up. – Mystery shopping revealed major friction points, like multiple service appointment messages from different platforms confusing customers. – Reworking the websites for a seamless user experience (UX), ensures customers can easily schedule service without industry jargon. – Cavender is forming “Tiger Teams”—cross-departmental groups who audit the experience from a customer’s perspective and make real changes. 4. Sales success comes from structured daily execution. – Every store runs “Quarter Times”—check-ins at 12, 2, 4, and 6 PM where sales teams review activities with managers. – Their non-negotiable daily activities include 50 calls, 20 texts, 10 videos, 10 social media posts, setting 2 appointments per day, and selling 1 car per day. – Before this structure, their group tracked 1.2 million engagements per year. After Quarter Times, that jumped to 3 million. 5. Emotional intelligence and culture matter as much as numbers. – Cavender implemented Values-Based Leadership training to define company culture across all stores. – Their mission is to deliver “an exceptional experience to those we serve”—which applies to employees as much as customers. – Instead of just cutting underperforming employees, they take a people-first approach, asking: How do we save this person?
