Sweet Hazelnut has been through a lot. After battling gastric ulcers and receiving a new diagnosis of Myofibrillar Myopathy, this beloved former CAS resident is settling into her temporary home, where she’s getting the expert care and love she needs to heal. But Hazelnut isn’t just recovering—she’s reconnecting. One of her new friends? Miracle, the 18-year-old mini-hinny you might remember as the official CAS escape artist. Miracle is usually a bit reserved, but something about Hazelnut has brought out her softer side. The two have been spending more and more time together, and honestly? We love a girl’s girl. Here’s the thing: in industries that see animals as commodities—horse racing, carriage pulling, factory farming—friendships like this don’t happen. They don’t get to happen. But in sanctuaries like CAS, animals who were once disposable are given what should’ve been theirs all along: the right to grow old, to form bonds, to live with dignity and joy. Three Years of Freedom: Happy Rescue Anniversary to Anastasia (Anya) & Milton! Let’s celebrate with some throwback baby pictures of these angels! Just over three years ago, these sweet twins, Anya (tiny spots) and Milton (big spots), got a second chance at life. Born on February 16, 2022, they were rescued just six days later from an active dairy farm where they were seen as “useless.” Milton, simply for being male, and Anya, for being a “freemartin” (an infertile female). When a female twin cow is born, they are infertile, which makes them valueless to the cruel factory farming industry. When we found them, they were crammed into a pen smaller than a car’s backseat, separated from their mother, who remained chained. But today, the twins are thriving here at CAS, free to roam, play, and feel the love and dignity they always deserved. Watching them grow into happy, healthy three-year-olds is a great reminder of why every rescue matters. Personal space? What’s that?! Leah is feeling beautiful in her red coat and she’s ready to use the nearest human as a scratching post! Leah came from a backyard slaughterhouse operation in Orange County along with 26 other goats. She arrived pregnant, and soon after gave birth to our favorite extraterrestrial lookalike, Libby. "Twenty-four years ago today, an ancient pony limped slowly off the trailer that had pulled in front of the borrowed piece of property where Catskill Animal Sanctuary got its start. His name was Dino. He was our first rescue. Some weeks earlier, a teenager had walked into Brooklyn’s Bergen Beach Stables where Dino lived and set a bale of hay on fire. A few minutes later, the barn was an inferno. Twenty-one horses were burned alive in that blaze, but somehow, somehow, only tiny Dino, who weighed just 300 pounds, survived. We welcomed the little man with open arms and plenty of tears… but then the real work began. Dino’s spirit was shattered. As someone who grew up with horses, I’d never experienced what I witnessed in Dino. He refused to engage in any way, choosing instead to stand in a corner of his pasture, head hung low, avoiding eye contact, eating listlessly. After his initial quarantine period, we introduced him to several other ponies who lived on the property–but he acted with them as he acted with humans. Any living being who tried to interact might as well have been a stone. I believe – no, I’m certain – that Dino was overwhelmed by grief. Weeks passed. We welcomed more animals: Sammy, a young steer locked in a crate with urine scald covering much of his body. Tim and Jim, massive draft horses rescued from slaughter. Seventeen animals locked in a tiny stall on the dilapidated property of a notorious local animal hoarder. Dino remained in his corner, disinterested in the new arrivals.
