The Catskill Center works to ensure a bright future for the economy, environment and culture of the Catskills.

关于我们

Since 1969, the Catskill Center has been protecting and fostering the environmental, cultural and economic well-being of the Catskill region. Our work in the Catskill region focuses on three main program areas: Collaboration: The Catskill Center works hard to preserve and foster the well-being of the Catskills by serving as a convener, fostering partnerships, facilitating discussions and supporting collaboration throughout our region. We chair the Catskill Park Advisory Committee, Co-Chair the Catskill Park Coalition, sponsor the annual Catskill Park Awareness Day, hold public forums on a number of different topics and take part in a multitude of other activities. Arts, Culture and Education: The Catskill Center supports arts, culture and education throughout the Catskills including at our headquarters in Arkville, at the Catskill Interpretive Center in Mount Tremper, the Artist in Residence Program at Platte Clove, and through educational curriculums for local schools and teachers. We provide scholarships to students from the Catskills for summer camps and colleges. At the Catskill Interpretive Center, we help visitors and residents alike learn about, explore and interpret the natural, cultural and historical resources of the Catskills. Stewardship: Through our stewardship programs including the Catskill Regional Invasive Species Partnership (CRISP), the Streamside Acquisition Program (SAP) and the Catskill Center Land Trust, we are working to protect and preserve the natural resources of the Catskills. CRISP is working to turn the tide on invasive species in the Catskills, the SAP is preserving forested, streamside lands essential for protecting water quality and our land trust holds conversation easements totaling 2,550 acres and owns four properties totaling 367 acres. These include our Thorn Preserve, Platte Clove Preserve and the lands of the Catskill Interpretive Center.

We’re excited to share that our accreditation has been renewed! After a rigorous verification process by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, the Catskill Center has proven that we have sound finances, practice ethical conduct and responsible governance, and can ensure lasting stewardship. The Catskill Center’s role as a land trust began in 1974 when we were gifted the first 100 acres of what would later become the Platte Clove Preserve. Thousands of visitors each year now enjoy Platte Clove’s wild character and stunning beauty. We currently protect more than 2,000 acres through conservation easements and provide public access to 300 acres of our own preserved land. A win for conservation and our community!

Our Catskill Stewards made a lasting impact in 2024! In the 2024 season, the Catskill Center’s Catskill Stewards Program engaged a record-breaking 155,000 visitors, reflecting the growing popularity of the Catskill Park. Stewards played a critical role in managing this rise in visitation responsibly, educating visitors on reducing their environmental impact and following Leave No Trace principles, both in the Catskills and beyond. Throughout the season, stewards protected fragile ecosystems by collecting 440 bags of trash and restoring damaged habitats by dismantling rock dams, removing rock stacks, and rehabilitating user-created trails. Their efforts are essential in safeguarding native wildlife and preserving the Catskills for future generations. Read more about the 2024 Catskill Stewards season at catskillcenter.org/news

The 2024 Forest Preserve Summit, co-hosted by the Catskill Center and Adirondack Mountain Club at the Mountain Top Arboretum in Tannersville, NY, brought together over 30 organizations, municipalities, and agencies to set priorities for the Catskill and Adirondack Forest Preserve Parks in the 2025 New York State budget. These parks, spanning over three million acres of public and private lands, are vital to New York State’s natural and cultural heritage. From protecting watersheds and vulnerable habitats to generating $3 billion in annual economic activity, the Forest Preserves play a crucial role in supporting communities and conserving these irreplaceable landscapes. Summit discussions highlighted the unique role each group plays in conservation, recreation, research, education, and community engagement to ensure the continued protection and sustainable management of these lands. Following the meeting, a letter of shared priorities will be sent to the Governor and her staff, followed up by in person advocacy and education with the Legislature and the Governor’s office. To date, the efforts of this collaborative approach, led by the Catskill Center and Adirondack Mountain Club, have secured $26 million dollars in dedicated funding for the two Forest Preserve Parks, increased funding for the Catskills Visitor Center and the Catskill Science Collaborative, and many other successes for both Parks and their communities.
