Joy. Today, we had our first company retreat. Coming from a ministry background, the concept of a retreat is familiar to me, but this was my first company retreat. Fortunately, we were able to blend both worlds today. The company Elisabeth Williams and I founded is family-owned, grounded in family values, but we’re careful not to use the term “work family.” We are a team—our families are at home. Today was about building up that team camaraderie and deepening the friendships we’ve developed in the workplace. We began our day at Sacred Heart Church in Indianapolis—arguably one of the most beautiful churches in Indiana. We take pride in being a company that "gets Catholicism." While many on our team aren’t Catholic, today was an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the beauty and tradition of the faith. As a company focused on making ministry and evangelization easier, today gave us valuable insight into how we can do that better. Fr. Meyer celebrated Mass and delivered an incredible homily on radical availability. Afterward, we enjoyed lunch together at Upland Brewery before splitting off into three activities: hiking, mani-pedis, or duckpin bowling. No work talk, no next-quarter plans—just time to connect and be present with one another. We’ve been having lots of conversations recently about intentionally fostering a positive company culture. Today was a meaningful step forward in that direction. A special thanks to Jeff Traylor for bringing this idea to life and to everyone else who helped make it happen! What a joy to work in an environment with faith at its center! A big perk is having amazing customers. Here is a fun note we just got in the mail... Dear Sock Religious, I received my correct size angel tee shirts today and am very pleased with them. However, I'm sending you a check for them because I kept the child sizes that were sent in error for my niece and nephew(Often times when we make a mistake, we will let the customer keep the incorrect size item rather than the hassle of having them send them back) who are just the right sizes for them and I wouldn't feel right about keeping the ones I received today without paying for them, as I like them very much. Thank you ?? Scott Williams, MA for hosting a few members of the Antique Candle Co.? team today for a tour of Catholic Concepts in Indianapolis, Indiana. Fellow venture builders Doug Wilson and Rob Wiley provoked our imagination and creativity as we were led through the facility were shirts, socks, stickers, and other goods were being crafted. We talked the whole ride home about how to apply some of the faith practices & lessons to our business for 2024 & beyond.
