The Lenten fish fry is a popular tradition in Cincinnati. People often wryly comment that the meals they purchase at parishes on Fridays are richer fare than they eat on a typical day. In other words, somewhat out of keeping with the Lenten idea of simplicity and sacrifice. While this may be true, many parishes end the evening in prayer or take up a collection for those in need. Even if the meal we eat might not be the simplest, gathering in community and offering prayer and alms on a regular basis centers us on God. Let us pray that our communities may mindfully engage in these Lenten practices. God of all, through Jesus we are called into community so that together we may bring forth your kingdom. As we gather in prayer, in service, and in fellowship during this Lenten season, may we be ever mindful that where two or three are gathered, Christ is present among us. As we break bread, may we grow in fellowship. As we pray, may we grow in faith. As we serve, may we grow in charity.

“Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart…” So begins the first reading of the Ash Wednesday Mass. As Christians begin this season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, God is calling us to turn ourselves completely over to the Gospel message of loving God with our heart, our soul, and our mind—our entire being. As we begin this season of conversion, let us pray that we may indeed return to the Lord. God of mercy, as we enter into the season of Lent, we pray for your steadfast, enduring love to permeate the dark places in our hearts and minds and souls. By our prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, may we recognize the ways in which we have fallen short in loving our brothers and sisters, and by so doing, failed to love you. We pray that we may forgive others as you forgive us, breaking down any barriers of resentment, judgment, and envy. Create clean hearts in us, we pray.

This year the first days of March usher in the beginning of both Ramadan and Lent. Billions of people around the world will be participating in these seasons of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. In the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is honored as the month when God revealed the first verses of the Quran to Mohammed. The season of Lent is a six-week period in which members of many Christian denominations perform acts of repentance and conversion as they prepare for Holy Week and Easter. In both traditions, the practice of prayer is intrinsically linked to acts of charity and almsgiving. To fully praise and honor God, one must engage in both words and deeds. Let us pray that Muslims and Christians may be transformed by their observances of these holy seasons. Merciful God, throughout human history people have striven to hear your Word and to do your will. We acknowledge that we often fail. In your infinite mercy and unfailing love, you offer us the opportunity to make amends for our misdeeds and to be renewed in faith. As Muslims and Christians enter their seasons of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, may these practices deepen their faith and their commitment to do your will. In so doing, may they be merciful to others as you are to us.
