Opening Saturday "Rope and Revolver: Artists Respond to Frederic Remington’s ‘The Broncho Buster’" Sandow Birk, Michael Goldin, Charles Lee, Deborah Oropallo, Andy Rappaport, Stephanie Syjuco, Wanxin Zhang On view January 18 - March 15, 2025 Opening reception: Saturday, January 18 from 3 - 5pm; remarks at 4pm Catharine Clark Gallery opens its 2025 program with "Rope and Revolver: Artists Respond to Frederic Remington’s ‘The Broncho Buster.’" The exhibition’s title references the work of American artist Frederic Remington (1861–1909), whose paintings, sculptures, and bronzes glorified Manifest Destiny as a form of heroism and westward expansion into unceded territory as a “birthright” of White Americans. While largely understood in a cultural or art historical context, Remington’s work is closely tied to the political project of American imperialism. The works in "Rope and Revolver" are not a direct response to Remington, though many of the projects on view take the likeness of his iconic bronze "The Broncho Buster" and dissect and parody its form. Instead, the seven artists featured in the exhibition take the ethos of Remington’s work as a point of departure to debunk the frontier narrative as a form of mythmaking. Through their respective mediums—video, photography, installation, sculpture, and painting—the artists in Rope and Revolver ask deep questions about what it means to be an American and how we can collectively imagine a more inclusive future. In an hour-long set, acclaimed singer-songwriter and two-time GRAMMY nominee?Tracy Bonham will?perform on piano accompanied by bass player Rene Hart, violinist Ani Bukujian, and cellist Saul Richmond-Rakerd. The performance will take place within Catharine Clark Gallery's presentation of renowned artist Julie Heffernan's painting exhibition,?"Whether You?Fall." The concert will be?punctuated by dialogue between Bonham and Heffernan. Bonham shares her creative works as the singer-songwriter once known for screaming “everything’s fine!”, now lowering the volume without lowering the flame. With the same bite from her mid-nineties alternative rock songs, Bonham explores what goes on underneath the screams. Join Bonham as she responds to the beauty, vulnerability, and rebellion of Julie Heffernan’s abundant paintings with songs from the past and present arranged for piano, vocals, and strings. As we conclude our eighth year of commissioned performances, BOXBLUR is thrilled to welcome Bonham and Heffernan for this special collaboration. Heffernan's selection of Bonham reflects the spirit of BOXBLUR's mission and continues the tradition of past BOXBLUR collaborations between visual and performing artists, such as with Timothy Cummings and Rufus Wainwright, Amy Trachtenberg and Sarah Cahill, Shinji Eshima and Chester Arnold, EOS Ensemble and?Chris Doyle, Margaret Jenkins Dance Company and Kambui Olujimi, and Adji Cissoko with Michael Montgomery and Arleene Correa Valencia, among others.

Let’s hope this, too, is another good sign. Not just the post, but the comments. The self-serving technology leaders who seek “less regulation” are looking to profiteer quickly, whether Pharma or rockets, and do not want to see, face, or consider implications. And they are big, right? Whether Musk or Andreessen. I mean, fox guarding the hen house much? ????♂? Here’s hoping that deep-pocketed minority remains just that, no matter how much they try to use dollars and fear advertising to sway a larger electorate. And here’s to hope ???? Thank you David Hornik
I find it absurd to think that Donald Trump, the candidate (and formerly President) of chaos and unpredictability is good for business. He wasn’t. And he isn’t. https://lnkd.in/gjrm4uh2

On Tuesday, October 8 at 7pm, Catharine Clark Gallery, working in conjunction with the University of California San Francisco’s Orlo H. Clark Lectureship, will host a special ticketed lecture delivered by Brian Dolan PhD, Professor and Chair in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at UCSF. The talk will be held at the gallery (248 Utah Street, San Francisco). Suggested donation: $5 (no one turned away for lack of funds). Annually, the Orlo H. Clark Lectureship invites a speaker to deliver a lecture in honor of Dr. Orlo H. Clark (1941 -2022). Physicians and medical faculty at UCSF attend the talk at 7 am at the Parnassus campus. In 2023, in an effort to expand access to the talk, Catharine Clark Gallery began hosting the speaker at 7 pm at the gallery on the evening before the lecture at the university. Past speakers have included prominent scientists, physicians, and artists whose research, interests, and work explore the intersections between science, medicine, and the arts. To learn more about the event please visit, https://lnkd.in/gcYdMAMG We hope to see you there!
